    CD-RW DRIVE WON'T WRITE
    « on: July 14, 2008, 04:52:47 PM »
Win 2000 Pro; ibm pc; RW cd drive worked fine; son gave me an Ipod and installed the SW for it; RW drive won't work; found Ipod sw does not support 2000 pro in that respect so I uninstalled the Ipod sw. I have Roxio Pureburn, which I reinstalled lately; When I try to record I get these two msgs; "Access to the specified device, path, or file is denied;"
"Cannot copy (file name). Files on this CD-ROM drive are read only. You cannot copy files over to the CD-ROM drive." I am trying to copy files to the RW drive, not the ROM drive. Looked for updated driver - I have the latest. What is wrong? Please keep it simple as I am extremely computer disadvantaged!  Thanks. Dixieflash >:(

Please tell us exactly what it is that you are trying to do. Do you have two CD drives - a read only (ROM) and a read/write (RW)? Are you trying to copy from one drive to the other?

Additional information will be helpful: http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,33586.0.html
If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?

Yes, I have two CD drives,  a read only and a read/write. They have been working fine until I downloaded the Ipod sw. After removing the Ipod sw and reinstalling Roxio, the write drive evidently thinks it is a read only drive.??

Okay, I put a blank recordable cd (from the same pkg that I have used in the past with no problem) into the RW drive D. I put a disc that has data on it and attempt to copy that data from the RO drive E to the RW drive D, which is LG compact disc re-writable, 24x10x40.  Or a music disc that is not copy protected, or record a file from Docs, etc. And I get the messages detailed verbatim in my original post. I'm using Roxio CD Recording SW for Win 2000, 4.0. I have updated to the latest drivers. Have about 30 MG free space on the hard drive; it has 512 KB RAM. If I knew anything else to tell you guess I would be computer literate, which I'm not. Thanks for any help you can geive me.

              You're doing great!

Can you copy anything to the RW drive? E.g., can you copy a file from the harddrive to the RW? Try to copy any file from the HD.

Do this: Hold the 'Windows" key on the keyboard and press the 'Pause/Break' key>click on the Hardware tab>click on Device Manager>click the '+' sign by the CD/DVD>are your drives properly identified? Are there any yellow marks?

You mentioned in your original post that you had re-installed Roxio recently - why did you have to re-install?

Do you have any other CD writing software? If yes, have you tried it?

              Please post back.

Can't copy anything to the RW drive. I get the msgs in the original posting.
Device Mgr shows both drives, properly identified. No yellow markers.
I reinstalled Roxio after uninstalling Ipod Tunes, as the problem began when Ipod Tunes was installed. Ipod evidently took command off the drives but then I was told by someone that Ipod doesn't support RW in Win 2000. Reinstalling Roxio did not fix problem.
No, I don't have any other CD writing sw. Thanks for your help.

@dixieflash: Please ignore this post - I need to get some help here!

Does anyone know if the 'Upper/Lower Filters' registry edit will work in Win 2K?

If so, does it seem like a reasonable solution to this problem?

It should. It's same NT type of registry. If any problem, I can check my Win 2K installation.

                    1. I'm surprised, iTunes installed on Wn2K, since it's incompatible program.
                    2. Win 2K doesn't need any extra drivers for optical drives, so there is nothing to look for here.
                    3. As drmsucks suggested, you may try these:
                       A. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
                    or...
                       B. http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip
                    or...
                       C. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
                    You'll see two items:
                    - ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
                    - ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

Since Win 2K doesn't have System Restore, I strongly recommend installing ERUNT: http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/
                    Manual: http://pcug.org.au/boesen/ERUNT/ERUNT.htm
It does even more, then System Restore.
I have it running on all of my OSes.

                      @Dixieflash: Okay, let's give this a try!
First, try Broni's suggestion "C" and post back.

If you decide to try "B" or "A," be sure to run the ERUNT backup from Broni's other post BEFORE you do either procedure. Additionally, I would suggest that you uninstall the Roxio software before attempting "B" or "A," then re-install it after the procedure.

Post back and let us know what you did and how things are working!

Before I try any of the above, let me update you. Just now I put a music disc in the RO drive, a fresh out of the box recordable blank disc in the RW drive. Then to Roxio - make a copy. It shows both drives. the RO with a music disc, and the RW with a recordable disc. Looking good. The RO starts reading tracks, 1,2,3,to last, but it says errors ocurred during recording. I put the "recorded" disc in the RO drive and got these messages: Windows cannot find ITunes.Exe. This program is needed for opening files of this type audio cd." Then another msg: "Access to device is denied." Does that ring any bells? I still think it all goes back to when I installed ITunes, then uninstalled ITunes and reinstalled Roxio. Roxio widow opens up when opened. I checked the system tools and both drives have a + mark. ???

Obviously, you have to re-associate music files with some program, which is PRESENT on your computer.

                        I assume RW, not RO?
