    XP keeps "resetting" itself
    « on: July 18, 2008, 10:15:14 PM »
    hello.
I've been experiencing this strange problem with my pc. Almost everytime i start my pc, xp "resets" itself as if its a fresh copy of windows....the background is set to "bliss" (the default one) ..all desktop icons and settings are gone... the xp silver theme is changed to blue again...and it even asks me to take a tour of windows xp which usually pops up upon fresh installation of windows. moreover the worst thing is that every program goes blank as if its freshly installed too... firefox loses it's bookmarks and asks me to "import bookmarks from IE" (a prompt *again* displayed at fresh installation). Azureus (torrent downloader) lost all the torrents i've added and every option is set to default. i customized taskbar and start menu... (added quick launch etc) ... switched to default... and messenger doesn't remember my ids... every program is as if its newly installed.. this problem has been bugging me for months... i doubt its anythin related to ram or hd cuz i recently added a new hd and ram and a power supply as well... computer specs are:

    D865GVHZ (recently changed under warranty)
P4 2.8 Ghz (recently changed under warranty)
1.23 GB Ram, 120 GB HD,
    running windows xp professional..

    Any help would be appreciated...
    Thanks in advance....

How do you log on to your computer? Administrator or User? Password?

Sounds like Windows is opening with a "default" profile. How many User Profiles do you show?

If you log on with a different User Profile, does Windows "reset?"
If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?

Did you make any changes to your system before this started happening? Does it happen every time you restart? Is this a cracked version of Windows? Do you have any virus protection?

There's only one user account on my pc and i dun even keep any password for it... apart from it the administrator account exists (which comes on that safe mode thingy) ... i recently added more ram to my pc but the problem existed even before it.. I've been using AVG Anti-virus but i dun believe its a software problem... my pc's taking more time to boot even before that "windows xp" window shows up... i flushed my windows and installed a newer version yesterday...yet it's the same... i can't believe it... 1.23 GB of ram and 120 Gb of hd without any program installed on the pc (after re-installation of windows) should take a jiffy... it shouldn't lag this much... often my taskbar and desktop "freezes" as if it's loading a heavy program... when there's actually no program running... i often keep a track of task manager but whenever it "freezes" there's no program running ...the highest CPU usage taken up is by "system idle process" running thru system... obviously meaning there's no program running and everything shud be normal... i have a clue maybe it's due to my hard drive... i bought it recently but it developed some bad sectors...had it repaired from the company (seagate)...it wuz running fine... i m not quite sure if its the same problem... scandisk doesn't show any bad sectors though...help needed...!  ???

What do you mean by this? Did you repair your existing Windows installation or did you re-format the hdd and re-install Windows? What version of Windows did you install?

Why did you replace your motherboard and processor? Are you sure that Seagate "repaired" your hdd instead of replacing it? Finally, how much physical memory do you have - number of modules, type (DDR, DDR2, etc), brand, and size? It appears that you have had a lot of problems with this system - right? Any other problems that you can think of? What psu do you have - manufacturer and wattage?

EDIT: To diagnose your hdd, download and run Seagate's diagnostic software: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/

After a re-install you need to re-install your MBoard drivers...
After replacing a MBoard/CPU combo you need to do the following:

          Repair Install of XP
