    XP help for novice
    « on: July 20, 2008, 04:31:04 PM »
I'm running XP Home. I've not installed SP3 or made any changes lately. Today I boot up and when I go to any website instead of pictures or graphics, I get a small box in the upper left hand corner with an x in it. I'm a novice on these things. I don't know if this is related to Java, Axtive X or what. Any help given this 'pilgrim' is appreciated.   RamblinMan

Is this Firefox or Internet Explorer?

      Download CCleaner
When you install it, make sure Temporary Internet Files and Cookies are check for Internet Explorer and Internet Cache for Firefox.
Check System --> Temporary Files and run the Cleaner.

      Post back with results.  ;)

If Carbon's advice doesn't work, and, if it's IE, try here: http://www.windowsbbs.com/internet-explorer/34960-fix-dreaded-red-x.html

Sorry, yes I'm running IE. Broni, I went to your link, I'll try to follow their fix but it looks a little like Greek, I'm a novice remember. Thank you, I'll let you know.

You can do it. Just 4 steps.
To open Registry Editor, go Start>Run, type in:
            regedit
            Click OK.

Broni, I got it fixed. The first fix at your link had to do with the registry. I couldnt even find the registry editor! But on down the page it suggested that the problem may have to do with add-ons. I found add ons and disabled a few that didnt look familar. Fixed the dreaded red x! Thank you for your help RamblinMan
