Image has to conform to specific dimensions I believe to be supported and be of a specific BMP resolution flavor. I played with this 8 years ago and cant remember exactly what I had to do, but it sounds like you are on the right path. I bet Google has a bunch of info on it.

I tried editing winnt.bmp and winnt256.bmp on one of my experimental computers but it didn't change anything.
Since I have nothing to do, I'll go google some more because this sounds very interesting...  ;D

i went to the address you've showed ,
i created a .exe file and replace it to logonui.exe in the registry the i copied that file to the system32 in windows folder, now after restarting the pc the logon screen disappears but not even the file which i created,.the screen turns black with a small moving cmd dialogue box, what did i do wrong or what i was supposed to do?
Also: I want to Customize bootscreen, can this be done without any special software? How? please help.
        thanks. ??? ???
