It's possible that your Audio3D.dll has been corrupted somehow, and if that's the case, it could cause distortions.  Perhaps you should check out some of the suggestions here:

Suggestions include reinstalling your driver, installing codecs, and replacing the file.

Perhaps I'm tired, but I don't really see any major red flags, so I'm starting to run out of ideas.

I deleted the audio3d.dll file, and restarted the computer. I then installed the KLite Codec Pak, and problem is still there.

I'm going to try and delete the card from "device manager" and put the cd for the card into the dvd drive and see if this will correct the problem.

I believe Audio3D.dll is part of your Realtek driver, so yes, you would probably want to uninstall the card and then reinstall it.  Heh.  Let us know how that goes.

I work for a mini-warehouse, and had a tenant suggest going to http://www.downloads.com and find the driver. Lo and behold, they did have a driver. And guess, what? I installed the drivers, and the alien sounds have disappeared.

That's right ladies and gentleman! Houston, we no longer have a problem. Apollo 13 has landed. All crew members are walking towards Mission Controll.

Ha, ha. I'm so happy and glad, that I just had to say all that.

I can't believe I overlooked that. I did go to the manufacturer's website, and all. But it never dawned on me to go to http://www.downloads.com/. I know enough about computer to have known that.
