Cannot download and install win service pack 2 for XP

I am trying to install mcafee virus protection but when I try to, i get a message saying I first need to download and install windows service pack 2 for XP.

But after downloading service pack2, the installation started but after a while the progress bar stopped advancing and it stays that way.  So service pack 2 never did get installed.  Whats going on

How are you installing Service Pack 2? Where did you get it from?

yes i am getting it from the windows site.  Im assuming there might be some problem with the mcafee software that is not letting it install completely.  Other than that I dont know what else could be wrong.  What do you think

Verify that SP2 has been installed by going to control panel, add/remove programs and click the box to show updates and check to see if SP2 was installed. If it has been installed then it's definitely McAfee.

Sort of what I thought when they mentioned it.  Try turing it off.

I did check the Add/Remove programs and no, SP2 has not been installed yet.

How come McAfee can be a problem, since you can't install it, due to lack of SP2?
