    Display Properties/Desktop
    « on: April 08, 2008, 09:47:45 PM »
Before I had a new HD installed, the Display Properties/Desktop had all the pictures on my computer in it. (JPEG'S)
I know that the only pictures that should be in Display Properties/Desktop  are located in C:\WINDOWS\Web Folder named Wallpaper

At the time I had, in My Documents, a folder to put my pictures in. This folder was named 'My Pictures'\
There was also a folder at C:\ called  'My Pictures'

After renewing the HD and before installing My Documents, which were stored in a back up drive, I renamed 'My Pictures
to 'My Photos' but found that when I searched My Documents the folder named 'My Pictures' was back.

I opened this folder and it contained a Windows Folder named ‘Sample pictures’ this contained JPEG Image photos, Blue hills,
    Sunset, Water lilies & Winter.

At present I have an empty Folder named 'My Pictures' at C:\ and a 'My Photos' folder in My Documents containing all my photos,
and the Display Properties/Desktop has only the pictures from the folder C:WINDOWS\Web.\Wallpaper
When I copied a photo from 'My Photos' and pasted it into My Documents, it appears in Display Properties/Desktop.

If I were to do this with all the pictures in 'My Photos'  they would be placed into Display Properties/Desktop
Can someone please why this is happening?

What version of windows are you running? And when was the last time you checked your machine with a anti-virus software?

The My Pictures folder is created by Windows whether you want it or not or rename it. It is a System folder.
I'm not sure what is meant by "renewing " the HDD does this mean you re-installed Windows ? ?

To clarify further the Display Properties/ Desktop window will show the default desktop screen choices in Windows.
When you use a photo of your own for example "Cats" it is then listed in the Display properties box as a choice. However this is only a shortcut the actual photo stays where it was.

So if the picture "Cats" exists in C:\patio\Photo's when i use it for my background it gets listed in Display Properties Window...however if i go to  C:\patio\Photo's the picture "Cats" will still be there.

I hope this helps and i haven't thoroughly confused the issue...

None of this makes much sense.  So, it's difficult to grasp what's going on.  You seem to be manipulating things in various ways without a solid understanding of file management in Windows.  So, patio's suggested reading on File Management techniques in Windows fits right in, here.

When you open Display Properties, Desktop, you have the option of clicking on the Browse button (see image below) and browsing to My Pictures or any other folder on your hard drive, and selecting images from any folder.

Why you would see any photo copied to your My Documents folder appear in the list of images in your Display Properties, Desktop list, I do not know.  Is that a significant problem?  Do you normally keep many photos in My Documents?

      Soybean,
You are right. I have very little understanding of file management in Windows.
I don't even know enough about Forums to reply individually to the answers I received so I will reply en masse

Currently I have a folder in My Documents, ( I'm not sure know how it got there),  named 'My Pictures'.
This folder only contains a shorcut folder named 'Sample Pictures',  ln this there are 4 jpegs, Blue Hills, Sunset, Water Lilies & Winter
I also have a folder named 'My Photos'  that contains all my pictures and another I created and named 'My Photos'  that contains all my pictures.  Before I had my HD replaced all my pictures were in a folder I created in 'My Documents' named 'My Pictures'.
(All these pictures were displayed in 'Display Properties/Desktop.). I copied all these to an external drive.

After the drive was replaced, and as I didn't want them to get back into
'Display Properties/Desktop.),  I created a 'My Documents' folder called 'My Photos' and pasted all my pictures in it from the external drive

      Spoiler,
I am using WindowsXP Pro SP2 Version 2002
My anti-virus check is automatically run every day. I also run Ad-Aware & TuneUP utilities regularl.
      ------------
      Patio,
I shall certainly look at 'File Management techniques in Windows'  but as I'm almost 80 I might find it a bit difficult to
comprehend how to manage them. But I'll try.

        Patio,
I visited the site and printed out the help on, File management techniques, but am still not much wiser.

Currently, in C:\,t he Windows 'My Pictures' folder is empty
In My Documents/My Pictures I had a shortcut folder named 'Sample Plctures which contained JPEG Image photos, Blue hills,  Sunset, Water lilies & Winter. I deleted it as these pictures are in C:\All Users\Shared Documents\Shared Pictures\Sample Pictures

I now only have in, C:\Documents and Settings\My user name\Documents\My Photos, that contain all my pictures and My Pictures in My Documents is empty

If I copy one of the jpegs from 'My Photos' and paste it to the, 'My Pictures' folder
it will put it in 'Display Properties/Desktop
No problem when only reffering to just 1 or 2 pictures as they can easily be deleted, but I have 187 files, 31 folders.

Does this mean that I should not have a My Pictures folder in My Documents\ and keep all my photos in a My Documents\My Photos Folder?

I lost my Desktop and Screen Saver tabs on my display properties. I had a virus and think I deleted a file needed for this. Anyone have any suggestions?
