    System failure
    « on: August 16, 2008, 04:00:07 PM »
Have been running XP sp2 without difficulty.  System is custom put together over time.  AMD processor, 2Mhz, 2GB RAM, Chaintech MB,
250 GB HD partitioned in 4 equal parts one of which is C Drive NTFS,
Second HD 15 GB also partitioned FAT32.

Just installed US Robotics fax modem without any problem.  Then installed software for it and when started to use the fax program, was asked which port to use.  Apparently I made a bad choice as I got a blue screen saying windows needed to shut down to avoid damage, and was beginning to dump physical memory. which it apparently did.  It said to restart after removing recently installed hardware. and remove software.
However, it will not restart without the same screen, only various different locations of the problem.
I have tried rebooting using the CD ROM drive and get the same problem.

Have also tried rebooting in safe mode from CD ROM and only get a little ways and get same problem or computer just shuts down.
Have tried reinstalling windows and get as far as accepting agreement and the won't go any farther.

Would appreciate any suggestions, or is this just a "Computer Hopeless" situation?

Just a shot in the dark. Can you get into safe mode and do a system restore?

      Thanks, SuperDave,
Have tried safe mode, and computer shuts down before finishes booting.
Also tried safe mode in DOS and got started looking at drives, but again shuts down before I get very far.
