Firefox add-on - Text Area Resizer & Mover
« on: August 16, 2008, 10:23:37 PM »
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8287

Yes, there already exist extensions that promise to do the same. Unfortunately none of them worked perfectly for me. There were too many cases when textareas were locked, no way to resize. So I decided to create another extension, providing more options too.

TextAreaResizer does not need a grip, just resize by right clicking anywhere inside of the area. So dragging becomes an really easy task and the often sensible site layout remains untouched.

Additionally you can move whole textareas to another place. Doubleclick inside of an area and all areas will get unlocked and movable. The repositioned area will stay fixed on the place of your choice even if you are scrolling the page. Doubleclick once more to lock the areas again. The extension's options allow some manual adjustments (e.g. use context menu item instead of doubleclick or addidtional key modifiers for mouse gesture users).

If you have it installed (you must restart Firefox), click on Reply button in this thread, then right click, and hold your mouse right button. Drag your mouse any direction, you want, and reply window will expand its size.
I really like this add-on.

If you double click inside reply window, the window can be moved around the screen.
Double click, then click, and hold left button. Now you can drag the window anywhere you want.

The last feature is very useful, while replying, and you want to check first post, for instance. You can scroll up, and reply window will go with you.

Added this (and restarted) but I think Norton is messing it up - double click brought up an unwanted Norton something or other.

Is anything meant to show in context menu?

Hmmm - something's odd ... selected the context menu option but nothing seems added - all I notice is right clicking on a text area gives a dotted line marquee - nothing else happens with further mouse button actions - other than marquee disappearing!

Oh well.

Disable Norton momentarily, and see, if it works.

Hmmm still odd - disabled Norton - closed and reopened Firefox .... same .. just managed a marquee again on right click on text but that goes as soon as I try anything else - and context menu still seems to have no relevance to this add-on.

Not to worry - I can live without it but - odd it is seemingly non functional.  Thx for coming back on this.

Works fine here.

There is a Greasemonkey script that does something similar.

I know. I had it installed. I think, this is from the very same author.
FF add-on just does more, so I dropped GreaseMonkey script.

Do you have ThreatFire installed?

Do you have ThreatFire installed?

Why, yes I do. ;D

But it doesn't alert me, or anything. Actually, I was going to uninstall ThreatFire because it is more hassle than anything. The program itself freezes when I click on the reports section.

Unfortunately, there is a conflict on some computers (don't ask me why on some computers, because I don't know; it applies to my Vista, as well), between ThreadFire, and installing FF add-ons. I posted at ThreadFire forum, but they seem to be slow to solve it.
What you have to do is, BEFORE you install any FF add-on, right click on ThreadFire icon, and click Suspend. The add-on will install with no problem.
Now, there is a very same conflict regarding clicking on add-on's Options, causing FF to freeze.
Apparently, that particular add-on wasn't correctly installed, because of the above conflict.
Suspend ThreatFire, and reinstall add-on (you don't have to uninstall; installing over the top works fine).
Restart FF, and Options shouldn't freeze FF anymore.

Note: Despite the above inconvenience, I keep ThreatFire, because I think, it's a very good program.
