Formatting discs

Hi all, I am a new member to this sight so hello to everybody.
i am having trouble loading my Tom Tom sat nav onto my PC, which is operating on Windows XP
When I go into 'My Computer' and click on the relevant drive it tells me " The disk in drive J is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?"
I thought that when a disk was formatted it deleted all the data on it.
As you have all probably worked worked out by now i am not very good on computers so any help would be very much appreciated.

What is "drive J"? Is it your satnav memory card? Or are you plugging the satnav in via a USB lead? Have you looked at the second drive letter?

You don't want to format.

thanks for your reply.
I am connecting my sat nav by USB and that is the message that comes up. I am worried that if I do click on yes to format, it will wipe my memory card of all it's data.
By clicking on no, i can do do nothing with it, so I am in limbo.

What is "drive J"?

Drive J is the USB drive, "J:\". If you format the Sat Nav, you will have to get a new one. If will erase all the files that make the sat nav operate.

Go to Device Manager, in Control Panel, and look for the name of the sat nav in there, somewhere.

Is it there?

There should be a second drive letter, either I or K.

Did you get a software CD-ROM with the satnav?

What model number is the Tomtom?

There is only J drive that comes up. yes there is an installation disc and that is loaded on my computer and my sat nav is a Tom Tom Go 710

The software is called Tomtom HOME, have you tried running it? Are you trying to back up your Tomtom onto your PC? have you looked at the Tomtom support site?

Yes I have tried the support site but upto now they have not been able to sort me out. Could you please tell me that if i should click on 'format disc' will it erase the data or is it just reading the  info on it

If you format the Sat Nav, you will have to get a new one. If will erase all the files that make the sat nav operate.

NO!

Unless you have plenty of money to throw around by going to buy a new sat nav.
