    CD Burner
    « on: August 20, 2008, 08:18:37 PM »
    Hi there guys!

I have a Compaq laptop running windows vista. It has a built-in CD Burner and DVD reader.

Quite a while ago I borrowed a friends external USB DVD writer so I could burn something onto a DVD...now my computer still has this external writer as a drive under "my computer"   aswell as the inbuilt one. When I try to go and burn a normal old disc on my normal built-in CD writer the computer can't recognise it or doesn't "see it" even though it reads fine, etc.

So....what can I do so that my internal cd reader/writer does its job properly? Would it have something to do with the external writer that is still being recognised by the machine but isn't actually there?

Your help is much appreciated! :)

Just a thought - maybe not that useful.

But did you use ''Safely remove hardware'' when you last removed USB DVD?  It does seem that sometimes windows will still think something is there when it isn't - if it is just unplugged when it suits and no ''OK to remove''.

Maybe - long shot - plug in that USB again and check it is seen properly and works - then also see if the onboard writer works or not.  Then remove USB properly by ''Safely remove" and see if it disappears properly.

Thanks for your help, the only thing is that I don't have the DVD Burner anymore so unless there isn't another way I may have to see if I can borrow it from my friend again....

      Cheers.

Well - it just dawned on me you probably hadn't got it now but - as a start at least I think it would be worth a try doing this - if you can manage a borrow again even briefly.  No guarantees at all but proper dismounting can perhaps help.

As ever with puters - it is often one thing at a time and this for now seems like first move.  May be other ideas on this if others post of course.

Silly question maybe - have you rebooted since this observation? - just wondering.
