    Guitar Hero on PC free
    « on: August 21, 2008, 05:33:52 PM »
Sounds illegal but it isn't.  Frets on Fire (http://fretsonfire.sourceforge.net/) is a freeware, open-source, Guitar Hero-like game for Windows, MacOSX, and Linux.  It is played by using the keyboard as a guitar.  It has a large community and many, many songs to download.  Geetar Freaks (http://www.geetarfreaks.webs.com/) has all of the songs from the Guitar Hero series, and Rock Band.  It has fan sites in several countries (links on the FOF page).  There are hundreds of fan-made songs and mods.  You can upload your high-scores to the world high-scores page.  It has a song editor to allow you to create your own songs.  It has support for the guitar controllers used with Guitar Hero.  It placed first place in the Assembly 2006 Game Development Competition by Unreal Voodoo.  If you have the minimum requirements, I suggest trying it.  If you have a console version of a Guitar Hero game, I suggest trying it.

Another cool thing about FOF is that you can arrange your song library any way you like by adding folders in the songs folder in program files.  You can also add artwork or album covers to the images in your library.

BTW, some mods are here: http://fretsonfire.wikidot.com/list-of-mods

Neato.  Well, I'll be at my fiancé's tonight, so I'll steal her bandwidth so I can check this out.  Thanks for the links.

Sooo, anyone actually tried it yet?  Can you recommend it?  Was it less than impressive?

If you don't like any songs now available, Geetar Freaks (link above) rips new Rock Band packs as they come out.  Rock Band releases a new song pack every week.  They have also uploaded songs from the new Guitar Hero: Aerosmith.  Please donate to Geetar Freaks if you like the site.

I've been toying around with it and although I prefer the real thing, this version is pretty nifty.  It's definitely a great alternative for anyone who can't afford to buy Guitar Hero.  I checked out Geetar Freaks the other night, but I wasn't able to download any songs (they exceeded the bandwidth) and I couldn't read the ripping guide, so I'm currently stuck with the same three songs.  It has a lot of potential, but I haven't been able to do anything all that great yet.

That's funny, I downloaded some songs from the Rockband packs today.  I have encountered that problem with some files, like Something About You by Boston, and Green Grass And High Tides Forever by The Outlaws.  Try later, I eventually got them.

They are trying to get professional web hosting, but I don't have a Paypal account to donate with.

Is there any way to attach large files to posts, or post them somewhere on the forum?  I have quite a few songs from that website, and could give you some.

There's no way to attach them to posts because the file limit is 256 KB.  You could use a free host such as Rapidshare or MegaUpload, however, and then post the links here.  Only do it if you really want to, though.  I'm only able to get access to broadband on weekends...and that's only if my fiancé will let me use her laptop (I've been using my sister's, but she moved out last week).  Also, with school starting up and with trying to get into an apartment, I really don't know if I would have time to even play.  When I finally have free time, the site will probably be available for me to download from.  Heh.

Well, if anyone is having alot of of trouble with a song I have, I'll consider file hosting.  Though I'm not sure I have anything you'll want.  If you just cannot get a song, post here and I'll tell you if I have it.
