shutting down a website

when I click on the x to exit a website, many times the top part of the site does not disappear.  it stays there and the only way I can get rid of it is to shutdown the computer.  windows xp and internet explorer

Hmmm - what ''x'' do you mean?

If you close a tab (if on IE7) then the site will go I imagine but here, am not quite following what you mean by "shutting down'' a website!  If IE6 then a change of address to load another site will 'kill' the previous one.

Help this old man and expand on your info.  What happens if you just close IE and reopen? - depending of course what you have as your homepage.

Obviously you are dealing with someone here who has very little computer knowledge.  I apologize for that. 

The x I'm referring to is the one in the red box at the very top right hand corner, which normally makes the entire screen disappear.  But many times when I click on it the lower portion of the screen disappears but the top with the web address, tool bar, etc stays there.  It won't allow me to expand it again or get rid of it.  So eventually after I have 2 or 3 sites hang up, I give up and reboot the computer.

Aha - methinks you maybe mean the red ''X'' next to the green ''go''/''refresh'' button - yes?

That button is there not to close a website but to stop further download of a page.  So - if that is the case then you may well have downloaded such that top section shows but rest cannot follow.  This should not freeze explorer or normally need a reboot to cure but - if IE is unstable I guess it could happen.

No, I don't think that is the X I was talking about.  This is a white X in a red box which is at the very top right corner of the screen.  To the left of it is a box with a dash in it that and a box with 2 squares in it.

I think I know what you mean but I'm not absolutely sure.  If it's what I think it is, I've experienced it.  What I experienced happened after awakening my computer from Standby.  I found that hitting the Shift key a couple of times and then clicking the maximize button on that bar would bring it back to a full screen.  Then, I could minimize or close the normal way. 

I'm using a Logitech mouse/keyboard combo.

I don't understand why there's so much confusion in this thread.  It seems pretty obvious to me that 1fly2boy is talking about the exit button in the title bar in the top-right corner.  Probably why he keeps referring to the "x in the top-right corner"...

He's trying to exit IE, but when he does so, part of the screen is remaining for whatever reason.  Now, we just need to figure out why this is happening.

1fly2boy...what version of Internet Explorer do you have?  If you don't know, click on Help and then About Internet Explorer...what numbers are next to Version?  How long have you been having this problem?  Download CCleaner and configure it according to this guide.  Does this help out at all?

You folks are dealing with a real dummy here.  I've tried to determine what version of Internet Explorer I have but I still don't know.  When I am using it there doesn't seem to be a Help button to click on.  And of course, since I've started this process I haven't had any website lock up on me.  So, I haven't tried the other suggestions yet.  I do appreciate everyones help. 

Another quick question - or should I ask it someplace else?  I have Norton on my computer, but is it necessary with all the things Microsoft already has in place and if so, what all do I need of Norton's products?  Or is there a better program for the money?
