Rather odd, though, that the battery on a system that's only a few years old needs to be replaced...not unheard of, though...

At least now, they're pretty standard.  I remember the old days, when you didn't know what you were gonna get -- mostly non-standard batteries, and I saw some that were soldered in place!   ::)

    Nice!

    (I thought the computers always had some form of CMOS.)

        I forgot where I was!   ::)  ;)

        I broke off a CMOS battery once, because of poor design.  It was in the way of installing a card in a PCI or ISA slot.  It looked like a capacitor more than a battery.  I never did try to solder it, because I was too afraid of "frying" everything.

        No, I certainly don't have the expertise to say you're wrong.  My experience is that every PC I've had -- I never had a Commodore, a Texas Instruments or any like that -- had some form of CMOS circuit to "hold" the date and time and settings.

        My first computer experience was my dad's Radio Shack TRS-80 Model II, and we never did mess around inside of that!!

          yeah, I have a c64 an such.  But mine was a dell dimension 4100.  You find that older pc's dont have the newer stuff where used to seeing.

          I'm not aware of any computer without CMOS. It simply wouldn't work without it.
