"Open With" problem

I'm having difficulty changing a microsoft word document to a Corel ( document.  Any hints on how to do this correctly.  I attach files in word that cannot be opened by some because they only have Corel and don't ant to download a reader.   :-/

Save the file as an rtf document.  Almost all word processors can read an rtf file.

or even as plain text .txt everything including word pad can read .txt
