microphone

I use my microphone to do simple music recording (with a program called
audacity.)  I have also in the past plugged my electric guitar and keyboard
directly into my mic hookup.  I know that this may not be ideal, but it has
never caused me a problem in the past.  Suddenly, my microphone would not work
AT ALL when plugged in.  It is completely non responsive.  Same thing when I
plug my guitar in.  However, When i plug my keyboard in i hear it faintly (which
gives me a glimmer of hope lol), but it is not being recognized or recorded in
sound recorder or Audacity.  I have tried every simple method possible
(mulitmedia settings, sound volume, recording volume) and i just don't
understand what the problem is.  At first I thought that maybe I did something
wrong and messed something up, but the fact that i can hear the keyboard coming
through my speakers when it's hooked up to my mic input gives me reason to
believe that I can resolve this issue.  If you could give me some advice I would
much appreciate it. thank you very much.

Possibly the drivers for the soundcard. You're best bet would be to find out what soundcard you have (I think typing in 'dxdiag' into the Start > Run should help you find it) and Google the manufacturer, model and the word 'drivers' - you should find something of use.

Edit: Maybe something else to check would be the volume on the guitar - I have an acoustic myself, but don't most electrics have a volume control knob to the bottom of the guitar?
