PowerEdge 1600SC Dell SCSI was booting and now not
    « on: October 21, 2008, 07:38:45 PM »
Hello, I'm new to these forums and I so hope you can help, I'm in real trouble here.

    PowerEdge 1600SC Dell http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/details?c=us&l=en&s=gen&~tab=2&servicetag=47RNM21
This is the page that shows the original computer. It has not been changed. It has also not been serviced or looked at in 8 years.
    Running Windows 2000 Server
Two SCSI Seagate drives, one or both making a bad noise.
The following is what comes up in BIOS:
    LSI Logic 1020/1030C Syn 320.0 Wide 16 Rev 1032300 202]
PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller BIOS 3.29
    HA-0 (Bus1 Dev2)
    PERC 3/SC Standard FW 1.80 DRAM 32MB
    After the LSI Logic 1020/1030C Syn 320.0 Wide 16 Rev 1032300 202]
is shown a message comes up and says
MPT boot ROM No supported devices found!
I then get a prompt to F1 continue or F2 enter setup.

Just this morning most of that was coming up, all except the part about No supported devices found and if I hit F1 it would continue and would boot.
The only thing and I mean the only thing that I did was to run the Dell Diagnostics from the partition on the disk. After that it finds no supported devices and won't boot.
What did I do and how do I undo it?
Thank you very much for any help you can give.

    Welcome to ComputerHope.

So exactly what happened? You ran a Diagnostic Utility and now the computer cannot boot?

Thank you for your welcome and thank you for your reply.
Yes, I ran the Dell diagnostics from the SCSI drive. At boot time there is the option to boot into the Utility Partition.
I ran the test for All and everything passed. I rebooted and that's when the No Supported Devices Found came up and I can't get it past that.  If I hit F1 to continue it takes me back to the Utility Partition if I hit F2 it takes me to setup. I don't know what happened.  The is nothing else about BIOS not found, or the adapter not found or anything like that. It all looks just as it did except for the No Supported Devices Found.

Can you get into the BIOS and make sure the Primary Hard Drive is set first on the Boot Order?

If not or that doesn't work, try removing the CMOS Battery (on the motherboard) for about 10, put it back in, and try again.

        I can get into BIOS.
        This is what is listed

        Primary Drive 0     Unknown Device
        Primary Drive 1     Unknown Device
        Secondary Drive 0   CD-ROM Reader
        Secondary Drive 1  ATAPI Device>Model Seagate STT3401
                                       Drive Type- Auto
                                       Capacity   N/A
        Maxium UDMA Mode   ATA 33

        Boot Sequence   1. CD ROM
                                   2.Hard Disk C:
                                   3. Diskette drive A:

        HDD Sequence  1.  Slot 1: PERC 3/SC Adapter (bus 01 dev 02)
                                 2.  System BIOS boot devices.

As far as I can tell with these BIOS the way it's set is the way it boots.  CD ROM boots first then the HDD.
The 3/sc adapter goes first and then the system boot devices. These are older BIOS than I am used to so I'm not real sure.
I'm afraid to take out the CMOS battery, won't that wipe out all the settings and then all the data will be lost on the SCSI drives.  I don't know anything about those kinds of drives but I need to keep the information on them at all costs or find a way to get the information off and put on an IDE drive or burned to disks, anything to save the informaion.
Thank you very much for your help.

Removing the CMOS battery won't harm your data. ;)

If you want to retrieve the files now, if you have another computer, you can attach the hard drive as a Slave on another computer and access the hard drive through My Computer.

Quick Question, is Windows installed on the SCSI Drive or on another hard drive?

Ok, I'll give the CMOS a try, thank you.
In order to hook up a SCSI drive wouldn't I have to have a computer that was capable of that?
I have other computers but none that I know of have hook ups for a SCSI drive :(  Would I need a special card? Would that allow me to slave them to another computer?
Yes, windows is installed on the SCSI drive or drives, I don't know how to refer to them, there are two but they seem to act as one.  As I said I know next to nothing about them, I know a little about IDE drives, I have programs for them to get data and make images, and I have slaved them before,  but what I have won't work on SCSI drives and most places want $700 for something that will run on Windows 2000 Server and support SCSI.
          Thank you for you help.

Honestly, I don't know much about SCSI drivers myself...  :-[

To test those drives you would need a SCSI adapter card to install them in another machine and/or run the diagnostics and retrieve your data from them...as it could also be the SCSI connection itself that has failed...
It sounds like they were setup as a RAID array because niether of them show in the BIOS so if one of them failed then both would disappear...it's highly unlikely they have both failed at the same time.

I know just enough about RAID arrays to get myself in serious trouble so i'll defer to the next Helper to tell you how to continue...

thank you very much for your reply, it really gives me some hope that all may not be lost.
I'll just keep trying to find all the information I can on this.
I know just how you feel about this SCSI stuff and RAID, I'll never as long as I live touch another server! One is enough for me I don't care how much I want to help someone.
