Where does Network shared file goes when deleted
    « on: December 02, 2008, 07:51:52 AM »
    Hi guys,
One of my network users accidentally deleted one of our company file shared in our server. Where does it go? is it recoverable?

    Thanks

Files deleted from a shared folder are NOT sent to the recycle bin anywhere.

Your best option would be to literally shut down the share and run a file recovery program.

Additionally- make sure that when you allow write/delete access, the users given that access are going to act responsibly with it- Don't, for example, give somebody who always comes in to complain about "lost files" that you find in their recycle bin ability to delete files.

      I agree with BC here...
If the network is set up properly the files are only gone on that workstation and reside on the server...
Much more info is needed here.

two problems with that being that they might not be using Vista, as well as the fact that I don't believe that it keeps shadow copies of entire folders.

Now if the server is running Vista, their might be previous versions of the deleted file, which I believe you meant to say anyway.

From what I can gather- the scenario is this:

we have a Server, running an Operating System we can only guess (probably some form of windows?) which is sharing folders over a network.

one of the workstation users deleted a file from the shared folder (preventable by changing security settings on the server to deny delete access to the share by users). Now is there a way to get it back?

Files deleted from a share by a remote user aren't sent to either machines recycle bin. The only recourse in this instance would be to use a recovery application, as indicated.

vista?? if Shadow Copies of Shared Folders feature is not enabled on server your correct..otherwise
        it should be recoverable..IMO

I don't see where they say their running Windows Server 2003. Could be Windows NT 3.1 Server for all we know.

        But- functionality noted.

I think so, not sure though- I think Server 2008 is essentially the "vista" version.

          or maybe Vista Business?

It goes bye-bye.  There is no recycle bin for network shares.

As others have mentioned, Shadow Copies would be your next best hope.

If no Shadow Copies, then restore from backup.

If no backup, then use an undeleter.

If an undeleter doesn't work, then you're screwed (and if there are no backups, someone should be fired...)
