    Major Help Needed
    « on: November 11, 2008, 04:19:09 AM »
    Hi,

I have a compaq laptop. Yesterday i validated my windows xp keycode then downloaded all the available windows security updates. After that i then downloaded software pack 3. After that i kept having a message comming up saying c:\$mft failure run chkdsk utility. I run this and it says it needs to restart of which i click ok. Now all that happens is it gets to the first black screen that has a choice of safe mode, last good configuration, start windows normally etc. I have tried every mode there possible but as soon as you click on it about 2 seconds after you get like 2 small popping sounds and it restarts again back to that page.

I am completely stuck on what to do so any advise is gratefully received.

    many thanks
    Kevin

Can you elaborate on this please? What kind of popping sounds?

Also, can you find out where it's coming from?

Its the same kind of noise that it does just as it shut down. Its always done it once just as it shuts but now as soon as the next screen appears it makes that noise then just instantly restarts to that black screen.

I dont know if the noise is relevant to be honest just thought i should mention it. Would going into the F10 controls on start up be able to solve anything?

you could also try taking the hard drive out and backing  up every thing on a pc ( using a converter) the you could reinstall Xp

      There's a few possibilities here...
      1) The Windows install is corrupt...
      2) The hard drive is failing

Did you install from a laptop OEM ( manuf, ) CD or a Windows CD ? ?
Find out what hard drive you have in there and DLoad and run the manuf. diagnostics from their website FREE.
