    Installing Windows 98se
    « on: November 14, 2008, 08:29:25 AM »
Hello, I'm having problems installing windows98se.it will copy all the files to the hard drive no problem, then after the first reboot i get the windows logo then after a few seconds i get a black screen with the error message
Insufficient memory to initialize windows. Quit one or more memory-resident programs or remove unnecessary utilities from your config.sys and autoexec.bat files and restart your computer. it does exactly the same thing if i try to use safe mode aswell it just turns the computer off. My computer has 4gb of ram on it and i'm using a 20gb hdd also i can install windows xp on to it without any problems, can any body help with this problem? thanks Roger

have you looked into the config.sys and autoexec.bat files yet for any odd script/commands?

That's your problem. Bear in mind that when windows 98SE came out, 64MB was considered to be plenty of memory.

I recommend trying 512MB first, and if that works move up to 1GB.

It's likely a overflow within some memory determining routine.

EDIT: darn it, beaten to the punch...
