    CONNECTION ERROR! PLS HELP
    « on: November 19, 2008, 08:24:46 PM »
    Hi everybody,

Pls help me if you can

My window Vista is already running on a SAFECOM wireless router. However, I connected another system running WINXP and was able to surf  the net without fuss.

All of a sudden, the automatic update on the winxp initiated an update to a (service pack)SP2 which I obliged. At the restart of the system the winxp system could no more connect to the internet.

Having used the Network wizard setup and carried out a system restore without success I had carried out a clean installation of the winxp profesional and ran the wizard all over again. and up till now all I get is still the error message that system could not connet to the internet but this doesn't affect the other system running Vista.

    Please help me

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
    Power them back on.
    Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

    If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
    cmd
    Click OK.

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /registerdns
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

    Restart computer.

    If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
    cmd
    Click OK.

    At Command Prompt, type in:
    netsh int ip reset reset.log
    Hit Enter.
    Type in:
    netsh winsock reset catalog
    Hit Enter.

    Restart computer.

    If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
    Restart computer, and check again.

        Hi Broni,

        I really appreciate your concern.

However, I've tried the 1st stage earlier without luck.

The 2nd stage (direct connection) may work as that was the way it was connected before I bought the d system wt Window vista o/s and had transferred the connection. This will not meet my need as I want d system networked.

I tried Stages d 3rd & 4th thru DOS command but nothing happpened.

I doubt if I could used the last option as this could only be accessed if I'm connected to the internet

        Thanks for your help.

Download it on working computer, and transfer it to this computer on CD, flash drive, etc.

First of all, who recommended anything like the above?
Secondly, playing with registry is one of the worst choices, when trying to fix a problem, unless....you're registry pro.

I must apologise. I downloaded the wrong link. please forgive me.

Having eventually downloaded and ran the right link (WinSockFix) and still could not connect to my home network , I had carried out a clean installation of  winxp professional. To my surprise still happened. Now I'm beginning to wonder what I've done wrong while performing the reinstallation again. Pls help me and I promise to read very well before a click again

                Hi

                res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm

The above error codes appear on my browser each time I'm trying to connect to the internet

I hope this will further put you on the right platform if that could help.

The above error is just a generic message meaning "Page can't be displayed"

Go Start>Run ("Start search" in Vista).
                Type in:
                cmd
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

                At Command Prompt, type in:
                ping www.google.com > ping.txt
                Hit Enter.

                In Window Explorer navigate to:
                C:\Documents and Settings\your_name (C:\Users\your_name in Vista)
Double click on ping.txt to open it in Notepad.
Copy all text, and post it in your next reply.

The notepad reads "ping request could not find host www.google.com. please check the name and try again."

OK, that means, there is no connection for real.
                  Is this laptop, or desktop?
                  Wireless, or wired?
I assume, you didn't have SP2 installed before this happened, correct?

Turn computer, router, and modem off.
                        Wait 1 minute.
Hook up computer straight to the modem, bypassing router. Restart everything. Try "ping" again.

If the above doesn't work, using good computer...

                        Transfer it to bad computer.

I only have the router in-between the 2 system.

The USB cable from the Vista system  is directly connected to the router while RJ45 cable carries the connection from the router directly to the system in question.

I just turned everything off, and now back on. Still no luck.

I'll wait for your response to this before carrying out the 2nd option

My systems are directly connected to a safecom wireless (swart2-54125) router all along. NO MODEM CONNECTED. My laptop also wireless connected to this router if it is in use

You can google search the router image.

                            I see.

Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
                            sfc /scannow
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).
                            Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it'll ask you for the CD/DVD.
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.

I already done this but got stuck on how to transfer it to you as no application and connection  on the system to do this. I'll find a way around this and  let you know. Thanks for all the trouble and take good care of yourself

Your computer doesn't have any service pack installed. Not even SP1. There is no antivirus, no firewall.

I think, your best option is to back up your data, and reinstall Windows.
Hopefully, you'll get your connection back.

This is a new installation. And that's why I'm surprised it's still not connecting.

I carried out the new installation when the former stopped connecting at the automatic update to sp2.

I don't know, why I didn't think of it before, but maybe your network card is busted. New one - $15.
