Squall- can you give us more information about this machine?

memory? what drives are connected? etc.

And it does show up during the POST, correct?

how large is the drive?

98 or 98SE?

try running fdisk (from a 98 boot disk) and deleting all partitions on the drive- assuming you have no important data on them- and try running windows setup again.

Active or not if formatted properly it will show up...

not true...a disk that is NOT SET ACTIVE will sometimes NOT SHOW...try it...

been there done that!!!

The drive won't show in explorer, but can easily be seen using a disk utility such as Disk management or Fdisk. The file system will just be listed as unknown, or RAW, and depending on the disk utility, the size could be incorrect (but not due to the fact that it is unsupported, rather this would be because of limitations in the BIOS and/or disk partitioning tool)
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Squall1 I have uploded what you need IMGBurn is a good burning
program very easy to use.

I uploaded IMGBurn and the ISO for windows 98SE.

You can install IMGBurn and burn the ISO then use the bootable WIN98_SE CD disk it makes to boot and use it for fdisk and format.

If you have any Questions post back.Go to the below link to download
the zip file.File Name: 98seISOandIMGBURN.zip

In my reply #16 you will see that you must use a CD boot ISO to get this
right unless you already have a Win98 floppy bootdisk.

Nothing wrong with the older machine.

Insert the Windows 98 Startup disk'Floppy Disk" in the floppy disk drive, and then restart your computer.
When the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup menu is displayed, choose the Start computer without CD-ROM support option, and then press ENTER.
At a command prompt, type fdisk, and then press ENTER.
If the hard disk is larger than 512 MB, you receive the following prompt:
Your computer has a disk larger than 512 MB. This version of Windows includes improved support for large disks, resulting in more efficient use of disk space on large drives, and allowing disks over 2 GB to be formatted as a single drive.

This is from Microsoft but, you can use a floppy disk ISO written to a blank
        CD.
