    CRT Monitor Install
    « on: November 29, 2008, 09:44:00 AM »
I've been given a PC that's supposed to have Win XP.  I connected a monitor to it and turn the PC on.  The only thing on the monitor screen is lines.  My guess is that I need to install a driver for the monitor but how could I do that when I can't see if Win XP is working or not?  All this is new to me.  I never had problems with monitors before.  How can you help me?     ???  Thanks!

Most monitors require no drivers so i would try another one to test...
It's hard to say what exactly is installed on that machine as it was just given to you.
They may have simply wiped everything off it before passing it on.

I thank you for your inputs and pardon the delay.  I was waiting to try a different monitor and, sure enough, this other one worked fine.

the problem is probably the xp installation.  when you install xp its only setup up to see the monitor you attached to it.  If your using a LCD in replace of a CRT your going to have some issues.  XP sense hardware changes keep that in mind.
Windows 7 RC Tester.  Working on it.  Your monitor says etchasketch on the side!

        Totally false.

the only thing the monitor "drivers" do is specify maximum screen resolutions and refresh rates; and DPMS makes the drivers obsolete anyway because that information can be discovered dynamically.

If you were to switch output from D-SUB to DVI, then there might be issues.

it stopped working likely with a "signal out of range" or something similar when windows booted because the resolution was, you know, out of range.

This type of problem wouldn't occur at the POST, however.

Squall.....I don't know why that might of happened......but changing from CRT to LCD is the exact same as changing mouses or keyboards........Except, without any driver install.

Well......either you're asking me about your hardware, or I just don't fully understand.

Anyways, does it work at all?
