This is not a direct answer - more a suggestion.

Just me but I do not like or use Win media player ... too much ''baggage''!

May I suggest an option - go find Win Media Player Classic  ..... free and available from various sites.  It has an ample compliment of codecs and will enable playing of about anything, including DVD.

More options:
 
VLC Player...FREE

k-Lite codec pack should also do the trick if you want to stick with WMP.
