Are you sure the router is working OK?

How about trying to reset web settings. http://www.malwarehelp.org/how-to-reset-internet-explorer-6-to.html

The router is currently running 2 other CPUs... When the infected computer is pluged into the Internet via wire or wirelessly IE will not even open a window...

Have you tried any other browser? Can you install Firefox and see if it works. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

      -Or-

      Download and run WinSockFix.
This is a two step process that will Back up the Registry and Reset the Winsock Stack.

      • Double click on WinsockXPFix.exe to open.
      • On the Winsock and TCP Repair Utility  screen, click "ReG-Backup"
      • On the ERDNT Welcome screen, click "OK".
      • On the Backup to: screen, click "OK".
      • On the Folder does not exist question screen click "Yes".
      • You will see a status screen as your registry is being backed up.
      • On the Registry backup is complete! screen, click "OK" and you will go back to the main window.
      • On the Winsock and TCP Repair Utility screen, click "Fix".
      • On the Apply the VB_Winsock fix? screen click "Yes".
      • The screen will display a status message "repair completed please reboot."
      • On the Repair Completed screen click "OK" to reboot your computer.
      • If your computer was not using DHCP, you will need to reconfigure TCP/IP.
      • Hopefully you should have connectivity restored.

Open Dial-a-fix and click the hammer icon. Select Repair/reinstall IE and click Go

If at any time you are prompted for the XP CD, insert it
Make note of any error messages and post them here
Reboot when complete and let me know if there's any change.

                  I was wondering about that.

                  Try this.

Reinstall  Internet Explorer 6 by using the Ie.inf file

                  • Click Start > Run and type (or copy and paste) %systemroot%\inf then press Enter
                  • Locate the Ie.inf file
                  • Right-click the Ie.inf file, then select Install
                  • If prompted for the XP installation cd, insert it to the cd-rom drive and click OK, or click Browse and navigate to and select the i386 folder on your drive (you may want to do a search for this ahead of time .... usually in C: or C:\Windows) then click OK
                  • Restart the computer when the file copy process is complete
                  • See if Internet Explorer is working properly now

How about upgrading to IE 7? It's more secure then IE 6 and has more features. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx
