You may try lens cleaner, or try the drive on another computer, but I'm afraid, your drive is dying.
You can get brand new dual layer DVD RW for under $30, at newegg.

I can confirm that Nero is crap with it's codecs and player...

And I'm certain the codec lingers after uninstalling nero.

To check what codec you have installed, click start > run.
    Type in dvdupgrd /detect
and a box will appear telling you what codec is currently powering your DVD playback. (i was shocked to find mine was nero! :O )

and here is a Microsoft app which lets you check your installed codecs and set defaults! :D

    Hope this helps!

Kurtiskain, Don't know if others (including originator ) will try you "dvdupgrd/detect" test. But i have on 2 separate computers and the results were the same "no such file found" ?truenorth

Did you remember to put space in between dvdupgrd and /detect?

it should look exactly like this:

      "dvdupgrd /detect"

      (without quotes)

this works on Xp Pro for me ill screen shot it even...and attach them to this post :P

what were the OS of the computers you tried it on truenorth?

Hm well my screen shots confirm that it works in XP pro :)

Home I'm not too sure about, though it should work as I'm sure they would expect home users to use DVDs too.

I ran the MS link I posted too and realised it can be a pain to get MS genuine software, so ill attach it to this post (It's tiny)

The program told me my machine had no "preferred decoder"

But I set mine to PowerDvd anyway :) dvd performance went up considerably.

        Hope this all helps

Kurtiskain, My apologies. I guess my last reply to your own post was too cryptic. The "No" was in reference to "did you remember to put space----". The answer to that was "NO".The "thanks" was for the pointing it out to me. Having done that i do get the readout from "run" as posted.
Broni, Am i correct to assume that your suggested input is to be typed into the "run" command? What will this action be doing? Thanks, guys, truenorth
