    missing IE icon
    « on: November 19, 2008, 04:27:53 AM »
When I click Start button ( XP ), there is a shortcut for Internet Explorer browser on the Start Menu, but the icon is missing/wrong one. Normally, you can just right click | Properties | Change Icon, but you can't on these icons. Anybody know how I get the IE icon back on this particular shortcut?   ???

    Thanks!

Look for another icon for explorer like on the quick start bar and drag it there and copy it if possible also.

Well, sure I can do that, and already have, but this is a 'just gotta know' thing. You see, you can Start | r-click start menu | Start Menu tab | Customize and then check/uncheck IE to show on start menu. If I 'uncheck', IE is taken off then start menu and I can add IE again by drag and drop, etc. After, if I go back in, and 'check' IE, IE returns to the start menu, but I have two IE icons on there. One with and one without the correct icon.

So, my question wasn't function, it was a nagging, gotta know, how I get the icon back for that particular shortcut if enabled in Customize.

Just wondering if somebody can figure it out.   :)

Can't you right click the icon and press Delete?

Do you mean you want to have other shortcuts behave the same way as the IE shortcut? (option to disable or enable shortcut)

OK going to try this one more time.  ;) click start | right click start menu | Properties | (start menu) Customize

if you check / uncheck Internet Explorer  it will appear and disappear on the start menu

the icon that appears on MY start menu when i do that is NOT the IE icon (the graphical picture). Its a general file icon picture.

Whether I check it or uncheck it, when it comes back, it still doesnt have the correct IE icon.

reading these posts- I looked at my pinned start menu items- and I find firefox. Strangely, although it starts firefox... It has the IE icon!

I wonder if this is a related behaviour?

Ah, I think I got you now.

So it's like one of these files, right?

What happens if you open it? Does it open Internet Explorer?
If it does, get into Safe Mode, and then restart back into Normal Mode. This will rebuild your icon cache.

            Yes. Functionally, its fine.

It's just bugging me that I can't change the icon ( the graphic ) itself. But, on any other icon I can. I'm wondering why this is.  ???

Create a brand new shortcut on the desktop.
Open the Start menu and right clik the offending icon.
Select delete if XP or remove from this list if Vista.

Now drag the new icon to the Start menu and close everything out and re-boot.

You could try rebuilding your icon cache with TweakUI.

This program here recommended by Broni has an option to rebuild your Icon Cache as well:
