I just starting using Firefox recently and want to know how do I tell the page is secure before entering credit information via paypal for a donation to my local church. Is there a padlock symbol or any indication.

Should be in the lower-right corner. A golden-padlock with the address next to it

Visit http://www.gmail.com to see an example. It'll secure the connection regardless of being logged in or not.

By the way, I recall it looking differently in Firefox 2. It might be a grey padlock next to the address.
I use FF3 now so I can't confirm that for you.

In conjunction with the lock symbol, you'll see the first part of the URL has changed from http to https.
