So it says here: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm
Same goes for Win 95.

Well just to make sure I went and booted up my 98 machine and tapped F5 as it was starting up. If you press F5 while it is starting you are not presented with any of the advanced startup options. It just takes you straight into safe mode. This is always the way I access it on these old machines.

thinkpinkx22: try to see if you can get to your files in safe mode and let us know what happened.

actually, come to think of it- it sounds like maybe the computer booted to the recovery partition...

I am now in safe mode and cannot retrieve any of my files. It's like they never existed.

Again, upon logging me in, the error window popped up.
This is what it says exactly...

"Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator.

DETAIL - An I/O operation initiated by the registry failed unrecoverably. The registry could not read in, or write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the system's image of the registry. "

Thank you for the help, I greatly appreciate it!

Okay restart and when your computer starts up press CTRL+ALT+DELETE at the user log in page. Login as administrator and leave the password blank. Can you see your files now?

If all of your data is gone then I sugest that you reformat your drive before you don't have one or you are unable to..

why diregarde my advice it's what you do if you lose all of your data because how else are you ever going to use your computer again if you can't kill the virus.

Please, don't post any advice, which may cause the user to lose his data for good.

It looks like your profile got corrupted.

When I tried to login as administrator it won't let me leave the password blank.
