Bad Direct Sound driver??? = No sound
    « on: January 06, 2009, 10:54:25 AM »
I'll make it quick & precise, I was uninstalling some programs on my cpu that I didnt use. After all said and done tried to listen to music the other day. I get a "bad direct sound driver please install proper drivers or select another device in config error code 88780078". now I uninstalled winamp and reinstalled it & updated it =  no fix. I went out and bought a new sound card, still installed it = no fix. uninstalled my built in sound card and updated and  reinstalled it = no fix. Any clue how I can fix this myself. thanks in advance

In Hardware Manager, does it show a sound device or devices present if so what specs? Or is there no sound device installed at that view?

I know this is a long shot here, but it may be a windows service stopping you from using audio.

This has happened to me a few times when I killed one of the svchost.exe's in task manager.

To test, go into control panel and under classic view, (I just like it that way) :) select the sounds and audio devices icon.

If it beeps when the error appears to tell you you have no sound drivers installed this will work.

      click start > run

      Type in services.msc

In the services list find windows audio, you may find it is disabled or stopped.

Start the service and try to play in winamp again.

      OR

If the above does not work, does winamp still want your onboard sound card to use?

In winamp, push ctrl+p to open the preferences box.

on the left hand side there is the tree of items, near the bottom, select output.

you are using the direct sound DLL, this is good. select configure.

It may say primary sound driver, but change it to your new sound card and push OK then close preferences.

      Try playing a song again.

The other alternative is of course the sound and audio box DOES open, and from there it is just a matter of sifting through the tabs and changing your new card to default.

I tried the winamp thing but nothing, the windows audio was disabled I started it but still nothing. Anymore ideas I thought the with windows audio disabled when I started it I thought I was gonna have sound.  :-[    in windows sound and audio device box no audio devices are listed

        okay this really is odd.

did you disable the onboard sound in the BIOS prior to installing the card?

If not disable it now and try again.

When you start the computer, it will either have a boot logo, or writing detailing the POST.

While this is on screen you want to push either delete (don't worry it wont delete anything), F1, F10.
Those are the only variables I've seen for BIOS keys anyway, yours may have something different.

Then under advanced chipset options,  you should find options regarding your onboard sound.

As for direct X - possibly not.

            Try this.

            Click start > run.
            Type in sndvol32
            Click ok

Does it beep when it comes up with an error?

Device Manager may not be showing errors, but reinstalling sound drivers may help.

if the windows audio service was "disabled" did you set it to "automatic" or "manual"?
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

                No that's good ;)

you just said you "started" it before, so I was just confirming that you didn't set it to manual.

On board sound chip may be shot, then.
New, basic sound card - $15.
