    Dual OS
    « on: January 11, 2009, 03:17:48 PM »
I would like to install Vista and ME on the same computer. What do I have to do to do this. I already have Vista on the computer. Do I just put in the ME disk in and reboot and go from there? Or is there more to it than that. What will I see when I turn on the computer? Can I choose witch system to open? Can I switch from one to the other system with out turning off the computer? I did a search on Dual boot and didn't get the information I was looking for.
I have some programs that don't run on Vista and I know that they run on ME so insted of using an other computer I thought I would put them both on one. I know they do it with Linux and Windows I just don't know how or what it looks like. I have never seen it. Then there is a lot I haven't seen. Thanks for the help.

    Is this a new computer?

Theres a good chance ME will not actually work on the new computer.

Beside that point, your better off running 2000 if it can run it.

Have you tried Windows Compatibility to make programs work on your new computer?
To do this, create a shortcut to the program on your desktop. Right click the Shortcut, go to "Properties" and click the "Compatibility" tab.

You need to make a second partition and install it onto that partition

Yes this is a new computer. Are you telling me that ME will only run on an old computer? Like a P4 CPU?

Vista wont let me load the program. It tells me I need a newer version. The program is Auto CAD and a new version cost over $3000.00 so if I have to I will just build a computer just for that program.

have you tried any compatibility options?

Using ME is a poor choice.
Is the program good with XP? Windows 2000?
          Buy a used computer.
You can get a nice old P3 with XP or 2000 under $100 plus shipping.

No I have not tried any compatibility programs. Is that some thing that you would load first then load Auto CAD? I don't know if it will load in XP or not I will try that. Still it is the same thing to get two OS on one computer. I really don't see a problem with ME I used it for years. The only thing I wold use if for now would be to run Auto CAD on.

ME will not be able to load half the drivers you need to properly use the computer.

Eg: Video Card, Sound Card, Network Adapter, and other system devices.

ME also has a problem that causes its memory to go corrupt after continuously running it for three days.

Here's the deal. Yes, you could have a dual boot configuration with Win ME (but note Zylstra's comments) and Win Vista, but Win ME needs to be installed first.  So, are you willing to format your hard drive and start from scratch with this idea?

And, see Using Windows Vista Compatibility Mode.
