    VLC media player help
    « on: January 14, 2009, 03:54:33 PM »
I just saw a video about VLC Media Player and how it plays Video Files and DVDs and you don't have to get more CODECs for it you just get this one program.

And the Video I saw says the newest verson is  0.9.2  but when I go to there web site I see  0.9.8a

So I am thinking the verson  0.9.8a is even newer so I got this one.

Right now I use Power DVD 7.0 and I wanted to know if anyone els uses VLC Media Player and how thy think it plays and compares to other players???

VLC is actually one of many players like this in fact.

I use mPLayer for windows on top of VLC as well.

VLC is great for video files, 99% of hat you can throw at it, it will play them.
However i have found that 1% in being videos from my gf's phone  :o (some type of MP4)

I recommend using a mix of VLC for videos and dvds, mplayer Non GUI for watching large .AVI files and also files you want to open on the fly. (this needs some getting used to, you simply drag your video file onto the mplayer.exe, and it just runs the footage. I make a shortcut on my desktop and just drap em on :) you use the keyboard to control it, f for fullscreen, m for mute etc.

For music I can recommend nothing other than Winamp, with iPod and other MP3 player support, it removes the need for that junk iTunes, runs fast, and is easily customizable.

After you have your line of marching programs, get the k-lite codec pack, and use mplayer2 in the run box to play anything else the programs cant seem to grasp.

      Ok sorry about that  :)

      Quote
Now before I install this what can I do with just the one I got?

VLC player will reside happily along with your current media player, i.e Windows Media Player or Winamp.

I use mPLayer for windows on top of VLC as well.

What i meant here is I use both, depending on my needs. VLC has bettter DVD support while mPlayer is just for regular files, but it will be easier for you to stick with VLC player.

An optional extra, that will help you to play just about any video file on earth, is the k-lite mega codec pack, which you can get from here: *Blocked Russian URL*/*Blocked Russian URL*/pub/soft/multimedia/codec/klcodec445f.exe[/url]

This will let your windows media player or whatever you use play alot more types of video files  :)

OK I think I am getting lost here sorry.

I was runing Power DVD 7.0 to play all my DVDs and Video Files.

I do not like Windows Media Player at all so I Un Installed it.
I would like to Un Install Power DVD 7.0 as well and this will leave me wih no Media Player at all.

So if I install VLC Media Player 0.9.8 is this a DVD Player at all or will I always need a Player to go with it or be installed on my computer.

Yes VLC will play DVDs just fine

Though Power DVD 7.0 may be more stable for DVDs in my opinion

There is nothing wrong with having more then 1 media player

I just find sometimes VLC can randomly stop when I seek in the timeline or somewhat, and have issues with my dual-monitors, it will probably be fine for you, stick with VLC

I am runding VLC 0.8.9 and I saw on YouTube how you can use this to Take Clips from a DVD and convert them to other Formats.

I click on Open Disc and it does and I pick my DVD Drive and the File.

But there is no other settings like the one I saw on YouTube for Converting Video Files from DVDs to other formats.

Then I saw on the bottom left it says show More Settings.
I click on this check box and it only opens a checkbox that says Subtitles.

Do I need anything els to go with my VLC 0.8.9 to do this???
All the Videos I see on youtube just say you can use VLC.

Just go to YouTube and type in VLC Ripping??

This is what I ment to say.

                    My VLC Title Bar says
                    Media....Audio.....Playback

It does not say Open  or   File    it looks diferant then what all the documentation looks like.

Can someone tell me how to get into the right Display mode?
I may have the Player set to open in Simple Mode r something.

                    Thanks
