Why can M$ never do things 100% right? Virtual PC case
« on: January 22, 2009, 01:32:41 PM »
On my Vista desktop, I'm usung VMWare, and I'm perfectly happy.
On my new Vista laptop, I wanted to set Windows XP on a virtual partition, so I gave M$ Virtual PC a shot.
Almost (<---key word) everything works fine, but I can't display XP screen in full mode.
When I try to do this, I got a message:
The virtual machine is using video mode that is too large for your monitor
and it reverts to windowed mode.
My laptop uses 1366x768 resolution, and I even tried to set virtual screen resolution lower, but there is a very same error message.
I tried to Google for some solution, but....nothing helping there.

I guess, I'll have to dump another M$ garbage.

I just tried it on my Vista computer and I got the same error message.
When I made the Virtual PC window smaller, it went full screen without a problem.

When I started Virtual PC, the window was larger than my computer screen.  I re-sized it by dragging the edge of the window.  Once I had the window small enough to fit on the screen, I was able to make it full screen be pressing Alt+Enter.

It doesn't help in my case, no matter what I do.
What Vista version do you have?

Vista Home Premium 64 bit.
Edit: Do you have the "Virtual Machine Additions" installed?

Have you tried adjusting the "Virtual machine window resizing options:".
To get to that setting, select the XP virtual machine in the "Virtual PC Console" window and click "Settings".  In the left column of the Settings window, go to "Display".
I have it set to "Allow any screen resolution".

My laptop uses 1366x768 resolution

Do you mean 1360x768?
Can you try it with a different resolution?

Actually, it IS 1366x768
I tried different resolutions.
I think, the problem is with how Virtual PC handles display drivers.
VMWare uses host's system drivers, but Virtual PC doesn't. It uses some generic drivers.

Well, if no solution found, I'll have to go with VMWare. I can't operate virtual XP, if I have to use scroll bars to see a whole desktop.

I think you are right.

Last idea...
Are you using Virtual PC 2007 Service Pack 1?

Surely, I went with VMWare, and all works perfectly fine.
Screw M$ one more time ;D
