    Power Boot Malfunctions
    « on: February 03, 2009, 06:52:01 PM »
So my parents were just going through the normal computer stuff they always do: E mail, Youtube, thats about it.  Suddenly, they begin telling me that their computer is having trouble. I stepped up to it and this is what i found:

I could boot the PC up, then about five-ten minutes after login, it shuts down. I turned it on, twice after this, and each instance had a decrease in time before it shut off. Now, nothing. I press the power button, and i can hear something running inside the tower, but the whole thing does not boot, and nothing appears on the screen.

I've tried a new power cord, resetting the surge protector, and nothing seems to be helping. If any of you have suggestions, please feel free to let loose and tell me what you think might be going on.

Again, thank you ComputerHope Community, and i look forward to reading your replies.

I would say its the power supply or the board. One other thing when you turn on are there any fans working?

Check the event logs for any error entries.

I just re-read your first post and just about slapped myself.

It won't even boot now, is that correct?

If so I would first check the Power Supply, but borrowing a PSU of equal or greater wattage and tring to boot with that.

You're correct in the sense that the pc will not boot. I think i hear fans running on the inside, but i will have to check and make sure. What exactly should i try to diagnose the problem?

Remove your existing power supply, and replace it with a borrowed one from a friend that is of equal or greater wattage.
