    Acquiring network address?
    « on: February 08, 2009, 08:38:58 AM »
I have a wireless network card I installed in a Dell computer.  The computer recognized the new hardware right away,  the install new hardware wizard came up, and the system successfully loaded the drivers.  The network shows that I am connected but I cannot get on line.  The little icon in the tool tray reads

     wireless network connection
     speed 54.0 Mbps
     signal strength excellent
     status acquiring network address

It seems to not find the network address.  I am assuming it means the IP address.   :-[   Can anyone help?

If more info is needed let me know.

The wireless card did work in a different computer I have.
    Windows XP
    Lynksys wireless G

I also went ito the cmd window typed in (ipconfig)
    IP adress 0.0.0.0.
    Subnet Mask 0.0.0.0.

    ipconfig /all
    autoconfiguration enabled
    dhcp enabled
    description 802.11 wireless lan card

What does it show in Device Manager?

Try ipconfig /release, then ipconfig /renew

Device manager does show the wireless card installed.
           I typed in ipconfig /release

No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection 3 while it has media disconnected.
IP address for adapter Wireless Network Connection has already been released.

          ipconfig /renew
No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection 3 while it has media disconnected.

An error occured while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.

Does this computer need to be hardwired into the network to perform this?

Have you tried taking out the wireless card and reinserting it?
