says defrag won't open.I found out that most of my problems was with my internet provider with the computer freezing when trying to get on internet.I also downloaded a defraging program and it worked fine, but the defrager won't work from system tools.I've tried to check disk also and it has a message that it is already in use with a process and ask if I wanted to start it when computer restarted and I clicked yes.

        1.  What is the "exact" message?
        says defrag won't open...

2.What do you see when the computer restarts?
...I've tried to check disk also and it has a message that it is already in use with a process and ask if I wanted to start it when computer restarted and I clicked yes.

Does it offer to check the disk if you don't cancel by hitting any key within so many seconds (default is 10)?

        3.  Which disk volume are you trying to defrag; e.g. "C:"?

        4.  Check to see if the volume is "dirty":

Start -> Run -> enter "cmd" without quotes

In the command window that comes up, enter the following without quotes where "c:" represents the disk volume you're trying to defrag:  "chkntfs c:"

What does it say?  Something like the following:
        Quote
The type of the file system is NTFS.
        C: is not dirty.

Trying to reach disk C ,I may be doing it incorrectly, but go to start then run and type in chkntf C then click on go and it says can't find. Also doubled clicked on my computer and properities then tools to let it clean errors on C,but won't do either. How do you check to see if volume is dirty? This comp is driving me nuts.

It has to be typed correctly...
          chkntfs space then C:

          IE: chkntfs C:

            patio,
When I read the above text, the yellow highlight portion, I assumed it already had a check disk scheduled (autochk?); so I was wondering why it was scheduled.

Upon rereading the post, I now believe the yellow highlight meant the disk volume was in use because it hosts the running operating system.

            smstock1,
Words matter.  Both those you read and those you write.  Be careful.  It would be helpful if you could provide the "exact" text of any Windows error message you wish to resolve.  You're not the first to encounter problems with the Windows Disk Defragmenter.

It would also be helpful if you would address the questions put to you (to the best of your ability).

No autochk has ever been scheduled ,but the message came up that it was.I'm also typeing the chkntfs c correctly and placeing a space before the c .I went back and did this again with the space and a small black screen came up then blinked off.I also went to my computer, right clicked on c ,properties, tools, clicked on option to check volume for errors and message said Windows  unable to complete the disk check. To the best of my ability , I'm telling you that my computer want check drive C.I've also read the the list on how to fix Windows built in defragmenter.

Go to Start/Run and type in command and hit Enter.
At the prompt screen type in chkdsk /f and hit Enter.
Let it run to completion and re-boot.

Went to start, run typed in command.hit enter and prompt screen came up,then typed in ckdsk /f and message said volumn in use by another process would you like to schedule this volumn to be checked next time system restarts, and I typed in N for no.Thanks, for trying to help,at least I got to the prompt screen with your advice. Why does this say this volumn is in use by another process,as I haven't scheduled any processes?

How will I know if it is checking disk, and why should  the volume be in use by another process,as no autocheck has been scheduled.

If you follow the instructions i gave then chkdsk will run the next time you re-boot....let it run and don't touch the machine until it finishes...

You have to go through these steps to get any further in the repair process....

Sorry, followed the steps you provided and didn't touch the computer for about 3 hours, but it never said it was checking disk,so after three hours I guessed it was probably finished if it ever started. Thanks for all your help, but I still don't think it helped any.

Sorry but if you don't see chkdsk running or get a notice on re-boot that it is checking system for errors ( can't miss it because it's a black screen instead of a Windows logo ) then you are doing something wrong...

Oh Ok,I guess was doing it wrong,as after typeing in command and hiting enter, then typeing in chkdsk /f and hitting enter,I was rebooting without letting it stay on black screen  until through .Will go try and let you know .
