Internet Explorer won't connect to DSL, but Firefox will
    « on: April 04, 2009, 11:43:29 PM »
Hello All.  I recently attempted to install Norton 360 2.0. I've installed previous Norton anti virus before with no problems.  This time, it wouldn't connect to the internet through IE.  It tried to dial up a connection I've not used in years.  I deleted those connections and was left with just the Broadband connection. No dice. I un-installed the old Norton. Still won't work. Tried to rebuild the connection through the control panel-nada. Strangely, my Firefox still works so I downloaded the newer IE 8. Still nothing. I then un-installed Norton. Nope-didn't work. Computer savvy associate I called said to get Revo un-install because the remove program application might still leave fragments behind.  I did and no it still won't connect.  I then un-installed the new Norton 360 and IE 8 followed by a clean up with Revo. Through Firefox I downloaded the IE 7 that I had before with no add ons. Still can't connect. When I try to open IE, the page itself will appear but not connect to MS, Yahoo, Google or anywhere. It gives me an option to run a diagnostic. When I do it says cannot connect to HTTPS, HTTP and FTP. It suggested I try turning of firewalls. I did that with Windows and I don't think F'Fox can be turned off. Didn't work. If I try un-installing F'Fox, I won't have any connection to the outside world. If Firefox wasn't working fine, I'd think there was a problem with the DSL.  I can't run Norton through F'Fox cause IE seems to be the default.  Besides, some things are easier to download with IE. If anyone can help me, I promise happy thoughts for you forever. Thanx, Ag

By the way - I'm using Windows XP and I'm connected directly to the DSL modem, no wireless.

Somewhere in IE there is a place to set some LAN options. I think is is under Tools Connections. You need to set up the IE LAN settings  so that IE will allow a proxy.
And you may even have to reset the computer to have IE get it right.

Oh, here it is. Tools internet connections LAN settings automatically detect settings.
I think that is all you need.

Try calling your IS provider. For me i think there is something wrong with the connection.

Thank you for the responses people. For some reason, I can't download the removal tool from Symantec. It just times out.  Could it be that I'm using F'fox to download? I'll try again tomorrow from work using IE and load it onto a flash.  Also, I'll try to call AT&T about this, if I can actually get someone on the phone.  What does tcp/ip fix actually do. I'm not a techie by any means and I'm unfamiliar with that.  Thanx again to all for your input.  I'll let you know the results tomorrow - Ag

Don't run two fixes at the same time.
Start with getting rid of Norton, first.
I'll upload Norton tool for you to some other site, and I'll post download link.
              Just give me a few.

AG...reread your first post and I missed the fact you do have a connection with Firefox, so you don't want to use xp tcp/ip ....It's only for when there is no connection at all....Very powerful little program.

Yeah for me, stay away from Norton anti-virus it's crap in my opinion.  Call your internet service provider as it sounds like your connection is down from their end.

If you can install avg free, download it from work put it on your flash.  Install on your PC and if you can update it your internet connection is up and it's a configuration problem.

                  http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afe#tba2

If you can install this and update it post back and we can take it from there.

Your choice though if you don't want to go with avg.  If you can just get anything on there and try to update it.

Hope you get it up soon.... if you pardon the pun :)
