Another Limited or no connectivity problem
    « on: April 06, 2009, 05:05:01 PM »
Hey I have a Dell with a linksys router and am having this problem. ive tried everything i can find on the search and nothing has remedied the problem so far. Its not the router as to other computers connect to it no problem. i have the right password, i reset the router, i ran a few cmd actions, ipconfig ones and a netsh ip socks catalog.reset. or something close to that. the last one worked for resolving the limited or no connectivity problem but when i  opened up IE address couldnt be found. but after i reset the computer i am again facing the same problem.

got the laptop in 05 moved out in 07 and now in 09 im back and it recognizes and connects to the network but as i said limited or no connectivity. looking for some other ideas for possible fixes.

also its set to automatic ip and dhcp, and its not a firewall issue from what i have gathered.

this is the command that resolves the limited or no connectivity issue but IE still wont work.

        At Command Prompt, type in:
        netsh int ip reset reset.log
        Hit Enter.
        Type in:
        netsh winsock reset catalog
        Hit Enter.

        1. Click Start>Run (Start>"Start search" in Vista).

        2. Type in (or copy and paste):

                  cmd /c ping google.com>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

              and press Enter.

        3. Notepad will open.

        4. Copy all text in Notepad ([Ctrl-A], then [Ctrl-C]), and then post it (paste = [Ctrl-V]) in your next reply.

no firefox won't work when I open it I just get the Adress not found message, even when the limited or no connectivity status goes away. I tried using the prompt you gave me and for some reason the message I got was Ping request could not find host google.com. Please check the name and try again.

Also when attempting to fix the problem I did reset my firewall settings to default but re-added firefox as an exception for firewall. When I run the messenger connection troubleshooter my gateway appears to be offline.

Means, there is no internet connection at all, but try one more command.

            1. Click Start>Run (Start>"Start search" in Vista).

            2. Type in (or copy and paste):

                      cmd /c ping 209.85.171.99>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

                  and press Enter.

            3. Notepad will open.

Destination host unreachable. 4 packets sent 4 lost. It is connected to the network right now and there is no limited or no connectivity status but my gateway appears to be offline. I know its not the networks problem as I'm on it right now on another laptop.

              Is this desktop, or laptop?
It looks like your ethernet card may be dead.

It is a laptop using an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG. Dell Inspiron 6000. I connect to the network I have limited or no connectivity. I type in netsh int ip resest reset.log then ipconfig /renew and the limited or no connectivity status goes away. Ran the MSN troubleshooter my default gateway appears to be offline. I know what my default gateway is supposed to be but have trouble setting it up for manual IP Subnet Mask and Default Gateway.

This time while after running the ipconfig /renew prompt I got the following message: An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection: Unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.

                Here's my current ipconfig info:

                Windows IP Configuration

                Node Type : Hybrid
                IP Routing Enabled: No
                WINS Proxy Enabled: No

                Ethernet adapter wireless network connection

                Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
                Description: Intel<R> PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
                Physical Adress: 00-12-F0-80-3A-A8
                Dhcp Enabled: Yes
                Autoconfiguration Enabled: Yes
                Autoconfiguration IP Address: 169.254.205.**
                Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
                Default Gateway:

I don't know what else information I can give you at this time but I appreciate the help. I contacted Dell originally but since the warranty expired I don't have the 70$ or credit card to get them to fix it. I thought it would be a lot simpler of a problem than this just a easy configuration or settings problem. When I did talk to Dell though they said that since I was able to detect and connect to the network that it's not a problem with my wireless card.

I think, there is something wrong with your built-in wireless adapter.
You may need to buy/borrow wireless card, and see if this is gonna work.

Did we mention the cable?  One may run faster then the other such as if it was fiber obtic it would work better then a cat 5, not sure if it is wireless or not but that should be taken into consideration.
