  • i am aware that most of my questions are stupid.
    about DOS

    dos in this generations are replica's of the original text mode based OS ryt?..
    can any1 please enumerate a few things DOS where dos is really important?..please correct me if im wrong withe the first sentence

      cant recal but in its self isnt based off anything IBM ask microsoft for a an os and wasnt able to provide one but asked for help and later was marketed as microsofts.  Something like that if I recall, if you cant boot your system its so small that you can just boot it off a disk if you have one.  All so you  can use it to easly multipulate windows files in such a way that you can easily get your machine up and going again,  the main reason was cause early pcs didnt all have cd drives so it was needed.  Also cd drives cost a good couple hundreds know its like 30 dollars.

      DOS once meant Disk Operating System, and was the actual operating system for computers, up through DOS 6.22 (I think). 
      Now DOS is an emualtion environment, for the purpose of writing and executing batch files and programs.

        Yes that is right for the most part.  Never heard of it being emulated.

          it was MSDOS then now i think it's just your Command prompt or CMD.

          DosBix is the emulator and you can use it to play old games requiring the old dos.

          Correct, although some later DOS games can be run without an EMU.

          I suppose I wasn't quite correct when I used "emulation" -- I was thinking in terms that DOS isn't really being used to run the computer, anymore.  When I bring up the DOS window via CMD, it's not really an emulation.  It's what -- an environment?

          Yes, the emulators, such as DOSBOX, are really cool!

          But it means the XP simulation come close.
          The DOS emulation is as close as you can get.
          Or, just boot off an old PC-DOS floppy and it IS DOS.

          The First DOS for x86 was from IBM.
           Here is a story dated April 1, this year, about IBM's  plans for PC-DOS.

          It was called 86-DOS or QDOS. Microsoft bought the rights for $75 000, then released MS-DOS.
