It was called 86-DOS or QDOS. Microsoft bought the rights for $75 000, then released MS-DOS.
Yes, I forgot.  But the IBM PC made it widely available.

MS-DOS was used originally for the IBM-8086...so of course it was widely available.

Windows 3.1 was the only other choice.  Course there was like DR-Dos and such but dont think that was used to much.

Windows 3.1 wasn't that popular untill a while after it came out.

There was a time when Lotus and WordPerfect were the standards for business.  Microsoft did a good job of marketing, and they did a good job of developing their office suite.

I used to like Win 3.1 -- the convenience of the graphical interface, with the fixability of DOS!   ;)

And the stability of a skyscraper constructed of balsa wood  :P

for windows 9x and 3.1 the best thing was that you could drop to DOS in an emergency and have all the DOS commands at your disposal. now we just have the "recovery console" which is far less versatile.

Balsa wood is great if you are making a boat.

Windows 3.1 / 3.11 was very productive with Wordperfect and Lotus 123.
        At least it would float.

All of which has little to do with the continued use of the DOS command set. Or does it?

Yes it was. Still is, depending on what you want to accomplish.

And nowadays while it's a huge PITA to get hooked to the net it is practically invincible to viruses nowadays.
