    « on: April 19, 2009, 09:39:34 AM »
Ok! We found a snake in our bathroom. We Ran out for help and when we returned (in a minute or two) the snake was gone. We looked for the snake everywhere but can't find it, We are so scared! The snake must be still in the house! It's so scary to imagine if the snake bites any of us! by the time they provide the anti venom here the person is dead!

    Am so scared!

The snake may very well have entered and left through a floor drain, or something like that.

Yesterday someone told me that if the snake was Grey then it probably wasn't dangerous, cause grey snakes are rat snakes. and my friend says the snake was grey , though she is not sure. could also be a grey rattle but it was very thin.

No, it probably wasn't dangerous, but I don't fault your reaction.  I shouldn't like to find a snake in the bathroom, either.

Unless you have small children, I wouldn't worry too much for the most part. There are a lot of myths about snakes, and many of them just aren't true. About 1/4 of snakes are venomous, and only about 1/3 of them have venom strong enough to kill a human (something like 250 of 3000 different snakes in the world). Given prompt medical attention, non-deadly venom rarely has permanent effect.

Snakes typically won't bite people unless they feel threatened. If you do see it again, don't panic, scream, or make sudden movements. Snakes can strike faster than humans can blink, so don't give him a reason to. Stand completely still until it decides to move away. Snakes won't usually attack an animal (or person) they don't intend to or can't eat unless it's in self-defense.

        wow that's hard to do!

I know, it takes a cool head (or so much fear that you freeze anyway). Really though, it's the best thing to do. Like I said, they will usually leave you alone as long as you leave him alone. I'm sure you've heard this before, but it's very true: "It's as afraid of you as you are of it."

I know a lot about snakes. I grew up around snakes, most notably a diamond-back rattlesnake and an albino Burmese python. My father made sure I was well aware of what to do. The diamond-back was captured from the wild and we were able to spare him from the butcher (www.waynokasnakehunt.org). The python was my brother's, and raised in captivity so it was used to humans, but you never know when 'tame' animals are gonna go nuts (movie star bear kills owner).

Knowing what to do did save my *censored* once. When I was about 14, my father and I were camping at Arches National Park near Moab, Utah. It was a hot afternoon, my father was taking a nap in the tent. I decided to go for a walk through an area called Fiery Furnace near where we were camping. To make a long, boring story short, About a quarter mile from where we were camping, I found myself standing with a rattlesnake between my feet. He was kind enough to announce his presence with his rattle instead of immediately biting me. I just stood there, unmoving... not sure if that was from fear or just knowing what might have happened if I startled him more. We both stood there waiting to see what the other would do for what seemed like an eternity, but was probably closer to 20-30 seconds. Finally, realizing perhaps I wasn't going to do anything yet continuing his rattling warning, he began to slither away. As soon as I was sure he was far enough away, I ran the other direction.

Moral of the story: Never take a walk in the desert alone while your father is napping.

Oh My goodness!! You sure had a strong heart at 14! You could be on T.V doing those snake hunter shows ya know!

I have been pretty lucky when it comes to snakes, when I was a kid, me n my mom were going to the dairy, I stopped around looking at wild flowers and in a second I found myself stepping on a green n brown snake, it ran in one direction and I ran in the other!!!
Then once going to school I looked to my side and I see a long black cobra passing by quickly, It was gone before I could react!

I've had worst experiences with dogs, It's the animal I love the most in the world but also fear the most! I was going to meet a nun in the our school and my pa went to see if she was there, I was walking around in the corridors and I see an Alcacian Dog coming towards me, I turned around and started running calling ''PAPA'' ''PAAAPPAAAA'' ,I was so scared! In a few seconds I saw my pa n the nun running towards me, they kept telling me to stop but I kept running all over corridors and the dog was behind me, the nun kept calling the dog (named Jumbo!!!) and my pa kept asking me to stop! and then finally Jumbo obeyed the nun, and I don't remember anything after that! except that I kept crying!
Then after 9 years , when I was 15 , I was in the same school , and me and my friends were lurking in the school when we were supposed to be home, We were all walking in the corridors when suddenly all my friends cried ''Run''  and hid inside classroom and closed the doors, I did not run but was calling them and asking what was wrong, then my best friend pointed from the window with tears in her eyes and I turned around and I see Jumbo's grandson looking at me, I remembered my pa saying 'Stop' , my friends cried 'Run' 'Run'..I just stood there looking at him (his name was Brett), Brett and I looked at each other for I don't know how long till the gatekeeper came and took him away.

So Quaxo is right, They won't harm us unless we harm them.

Yeah, dogs are weird. Sometimes they'll bite you if you run. It becomes a game for them. Sometimes they'll leave you alone if you just stand there, just barking at you from 10 ft. away or so. Other times, you have to establish that you are bigger than them and they'll leave you alone.

          Hey! Story time again!

When I was 16, my father took in a German Shepard that had been abused by his previous owner and was a bit aggressive. While the dog obeyed my father, he was very aggressive towards me, always growling and barking at me. One day, the dog was eating by our sliding back door. His dish was sitting on a mat. When I opened the door it hit the mat slightly, causing it move. The dog assumed I was trying to steal his food and snapped his jaws around my thigh. My immediate reaction... as hard as I could I punched the dog right in the top of his head (I know, poor thing). He released my leg, fell to the ground, then ran away yelping. Never again did that dog bite me, growl at me, or bark at me. From then on he acted like I was his best friend.  :P

Moral of the story: Never put the dog's food dish by a sliding glass door.

I foster abused dogs for my local animal shelter. I try to get them socialized and used to the fact that every human isn't going to hurt them. It can be a real struggle sometimes. Most of these dogs are very meek and afraid, but some can be very mean and territorial. I treat them all the same. I never show fear (even when they bite me). About 75% of the time I get these dogs to be social and get over their fear of people. About 50% of those dogs get adopted and I feel like I've done something good for them. The rest... well It can be really sad sometimes :'(

By the way, if your really worried about a snake in your house get a cat. Most cats will kill any vermin in your house.

I think that's a good Idea, I should get a cat, though I always keep askin my pa for a doggy, cause doggie's love you but cat's seem cold.
