Laptop to PS3

When I connect my laptop to my PS3 a media player sign shows up on the PS3 menu screen but I can't seem to transfer music pics etc. Any Idea how I can do it direct without using my Ipod? Thanks in advance

      You cant transfer files over an Ethernet cable.

      The best way to do is is to just use a USB drive.

      Like my Ipod as I do anyway. Just wondered why Media player shows up but can't do anything with it.
