Help! Accidentally Deleted Icons

I was cleaning my hard drive yesterday and I deleted some folders of uncessary files. I think that I may have accidentally deleted a folder that contained computer icons. When I found out it was too late, I had already emptied my recycling bin.
All my icons look like:

Some of the program icons, imaging icons (png, jpeg, etc.), and audio icons looked just like the icon above.

I tried to restore my computer to the settings it had before using System Restore, but it didn't work.
Is there anything I could do to get the icons back? I would really appreciate the help!

Try last known good configuration....F8 into safe mode

Hope it works. Another thing to note, if you do an in-place upgrade (upgrade to same version of windows you have), the installer should repair any bad/corrupted system files.

That kinda didn't make sense. You mean a Repair Install?

There is a feature in the program that allows you to rebuild the Icon Cache. Worth a shot.
(Note: Your Desktop Icon arrangement will be reset and all your icons will be moved around.)

Well, I've been told many times that you could just take the windows upgrade cd, and let's say you have windows ultimate and you tell the installer to upgrade to windows ultimate again, it should repair corrupt system files on the pc.

Never had to do that, but that's what I've been told.

Thanks so much for the replies. I appreciate them.
Sadly, I bought my laptop at a second hand electronic store and I don't have the XP CD. It was already pre-installed. So I couldn't try that option.
I also tried the power tweak tool and the last known good configuration, but niether worked for me.
Any other ideas    I'm still racking my brain trying to figure this out.

Sounds like you managed to delete the program that set up those associations (and shortcuts).

For example, If I was to delete my paint shop pro folder right now, and my winamp folder- I would have the same problem as you have now- my images and music would have the default icon.


From the sounds of it you should be able to simply install a Image editor and a music program (whatever MP3 player you like- or reinstall the one your using).

rebuilding the icon cache would simply add the same non-existent icons, if my theory is true.


windows will still look for the icon, not find it, and add the default to the system imagelist.
