Activating Infrared
« on: May 26, 2009, 10:45:45 PM »
Okay, so i have a Compaq Presario v6000, and on the front I have the infrared logo

My question is, how do I used the damned thing? I can't find any resources on the internet about activating it, or if i need special software, or what?

I'm using Windows XP Sp3.

Any ideas welcome,
cheers,
Bones

Bones92...

Actually, you'll need an optional remote control (available from the vendor) so you can operate your notebook up to 10 feet away.  Contact the manufacturer for pricing and availability.

From what I read from the vendor's site...the infrared is for a remote control.

Almost any IR device should work on any machine with built-in IR...
I'd investigate further.

Well...from what I've read on these certain models...the built-in infrared is for an optional remote control that lets a user control certain functions of the laptop, such as Quick Play.

It controls some multimedia functions, as well as having the capability to turn the computer on/off.  It all depends on what keys are on the optional remote control.

Also...here's a link to the optional remote control:  http://www.bonanzle.com/booths/zkarlo/items/Compaq_Presario_V5000_V6000_Remote_Control_407313_001

Wait, maybe I haven't been clear enough. I don't want a remote control for my laptop. I have a palmtop with an IR port - I want to be able to transfer files with the port, not use it for a remote control. Is this possible, and if so what software do I need to use?

I am a programmer so I could make my own, if I knew what to reference.

Why don't you see if laptop receives your file from palm top.
Just align palmtop's infrared port to laptop's and then send any small size file from your palmtop look what happens !

Nothing happens. Believe it or not, I tried this before posting   ::)

No hard feelings. i believe it is a "consumer IR" port - GlitchPC was correct - so apparently it doesn't do very much, and can't be used to transfer files with. Oh well. Thanks for help everyone.
