Will not connect to internet through wireless adapter?
    « on: June 11, 2009, 09:04:11 AM »
I'm running on Windows XP and am hooked to internet through a Belkin wireless adapter.
The modem and router are on this computer and the internet is working fine.
Usually clicking "repair" will reconnect me immediately, but it now says that the connection cannot be completed because it cannot connect to the wireless network.
I haven't done anything differently or installed/uninstalled/deleted anything vital.

I really don't know anything about the internet or connections, so any help would be appreciated. I will add anything that is needed.

If this is a USB wireless adapter, try removing it, rebooting the PC and reconnecting it (preferably to the same USB port).

I tried this, it makes sense, but it didn't work.
It still says that it is unable to connect to the wireless network.

Thank you very much, though. :]

Are you close enough to the router?

Yes, it comes up on the list of networks in range with full service bars.

When I have a problem with this, this is what I do to fix it:

Right click on the wireless network manager and click repair.  If that doesnt help
Go to start>run and type services.msc and hit enter
look for wireless zero config and either start it if its not started or restart it if its not

That's a good point.  Does the Belkin kit come with any software that overrides WZC?  THere may be a conflict, so the next route to go down if computeruler's suggestion doesn't work, is to reinstall from the dsisk that came with the adapter.

Reinstallation got it to connect, but now it says there is limited or no connectivity because the IP address cannot be renewed.
Also, it only works with WZC disabled, even after I restarted it.
I don't know if that matters or not. Haha.

            I have - a few times.
It keeps getting errors, but now about the IP address instead of the wireless network.

It's irritating when things stop working like this.  Could be that a component is dying.  Could also be that there's been a driver update for the wireless card.  Try rolling back the driver?

If you still get Limited or connectivity error, please try to disable firewall on the computer and check the security password if your network is secured.

I'd be amazed if this issue were related to the firewall and I'd certainly think long and hard before arbitrarily turning it off.  There's no harm in confirming the wireless password though.  Another thing to try is to delete the wireless profile and recreate.

Or try to reset the router.  Agreeded that I would be really amazed if it had to do with the firewall.

I haven't been on in a while, still no computer working.
Still says that it cannot renew the IP address when I click repair.
I went into command prompts and did ipconfig/renew and it did nothing.
Or, every once in a while, it will say that it cannot connect to the network. Again.

I even called Charter, they couldn't fix it through troubleshooting.
But, they won't set up an appointment because I'm not the one in charge of the account. Ha.
                Frustrating!

I don't think I know how to roll back the driver, though? Maybe that would help.
Reset the router a few times, did nothing.
