NEWBIE: No sound after reinstall of Windows XP
« on: June 12, 2009, 10:07:37 AM »
My computer was demolished by viruses, so I had Windows XP reinstalled. Everything is great, but now I have no sound, and the computer doesn't even recognize the sound card. I don't know what card I have and I'd rather not crack the case open to search. Is there some other way to identify what sound card I have and resolve this issue?

Can you post your computers specs for us....

Go to device manager and see if you have any sign of problems with your sound ....... is it a card or embedded.

tomcraig5,While i do encourage you to get to a stage of comfort re the accessing and working on the interior of your computer. It will greatly add to your enjoyment of your computer and also greatly reduce your cost and as well allow you to do some occasional necessary maintenance. In the meantime download the program "Everest" free home addition and run it on your computer. It will detail all of the components of your computer. Print or keep a copy and you will then always be able to refer to the specifics of the hardware of your computer and tell us what you have. It is probably the case in this instance that you need to reinstall the drivers for the sound card you have for the new o/s to work with it. truenorth

Unless if its a custom build you should have the driver too it, even if not its not hard to get.
