Can overhating cause a notebook screen to break?

My screen is completely blacked out in places and the rest is covered in multicolored lines. What happened? Is overheating the culprit? and does standard warranty apply to broken screens do to overheating? My screen is similiar to http://images.google.ie/images?&um=1&hl=en&q=broken+lcd&&sa=N&start=0&ndsp
