Hardware name origins

Can anyone tell me why the computer keyboard is called a "keyboard"? Yes, it is a board but does not have "keys" only buttons.

kskip.....LOL .......actually the "keyboard" is made up of ..... a number of momentary contact switches ......not buttons .........
But all jest aside , I would guess that it is named for the typewriter .......after all when a key was pressed it produced a letter on the paper........... now when a key is pressed a letter or symbol appears on the monitor or screen or display or whatever you wish to call the thing.

Why is the Hard drive .......HARD  .......actually its fragile .
Why is Bossy called a cow ?

Maybe thats the politicaly correct way to refer to the thing that you type on when using the thing referred to as the computer .......

Perhaps one of our members whois a historian can offer you a alternate definition of the keyboard .
