    Computer Shuts Down Unexptectedly...
    « on: June 28, 2009, 04:47:52 PM »
I am new to the site and am having puter shutdown problems.  I have an HP Pavilion a730n Pentium 4 desktop with 250GB WD hard drive and 2GB memory running Windows XP Home Edition and Service Pack 3.  What it will do is click the monitor will go black and no signal window appears while the power button on the tower is still lit.  Thought puter went into sleep mode but moving mouse or pressing the sleep button did not bring it back.  Always end up pressing the power button until puter shuts down completely.  What I have done so far is this:

    1.   Steps for Windows XP :
    a.   Wait until the hard drive activity light on the computer is not lit and then press and  hold the Power button on the computer case until the computer turns off.
    b.   Wait 5 seconds and then turn on the computer by pressing the Power button again.
    c.   In Windows XP, click Start, click Control Panel.
    d.   Double-click Power Options.
    e.   Select the Always on power scheme and set it to Never.
    f.   Click the Hibernate tab and remove the checkmark from Enable hibernate support.
This did not work…still keeps shutting down.

Updated & ran antivirus, malwarebytes & ad-aware and all found no threats.

Ran all PC-Doctor tests and everything passed.

Went to hard drive manufacturers site & burned diagnostic disc.  Ran everything on that, tested hard drive, memory…etc.   All passed.

Got a can of compressed air and sprayed off inside of tower, hard drive, motherboard, fans, heat sinks…everything.

    Still shuts down.

It does not matter if I am surfing online, playing games online or offline, using Microsoft word or any other non-internet program.  Also it will shut down when idle…no specific time frame it just shuts down whenever it wants to.

    Help Please!

    Disable all power saving features.

You may also have a failing power supply. They can do all sorts of weird things on their way out.

      Disable "Restart on error" feature...

      1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
      2. Click the Advanced tab (Vista: click Advanced system settings).
      3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
      4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
      5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

You may see some error message. If so, post back what it says.

      Download, and install SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
      Post your computer temperatures:

Provide processor info (hold Windows logo key, and hit Pause/Break key to find out).

Usually, the power supply is swapped for a known good supply of the same or greater wattage....How many watts is your supply rated for? Download and run Speedfan to confirm your temps are OK....a bad voltage may show up here too.

You can simply write down those numbers.

I know I could write it down but a picture IS worth a thousand words.

              Vbat = 0.00

Would that indicate that the CMOS battery is dead?
Or does that just indicate that the circuit is interrupted because the mother board is on AC?

<edit>  Windows should still remember it's own settings, as they are stored on the hard disk.

              I'm just curious.  </edit>

I'm not a hardware guy, so I have no clue about voltages. Maybe someone else will explain.

              Download HijackThis:
              http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
by clicking on Download HijackThis Installer
              Install, and run it.
              Post HijackTHis log.
Do NOT attempt to fix anything!

NOTE. If you're using Vista, right click on HijackThis, and click Run as Administrator

                Vbat = 0.00

Speedfan did not really explain this category very well not sure if it is normal or not?

Yeah, reading some other boards, it looks like there is something wrong with that reading, or SpeedFan is reporting it incorrectly.
