    Need some serious help!
    « on: June 30, 2009, 08:29:45 AM »
Hi, new to the forum, I'm here because I've hit a brickwall....

running an old sharp laptop, with XP pro, the 'enter' key doesn't work, but that wasn't an issue, until now....

I contracted a virus from facebook, it has left my PC constantly rebooting, I can get to the 'choose boot' screen and can highlight safemode, but I cannot press enter.
Is there a way of forcing the computer into safemode?
I have just bought a USB to IDE/SATA cable and have removed the hard drive, I can access it and have run AVG on it to remove the virus, but it has left me with the registry issue, does anyone know the DOS command that will allow me to repair the registry?
I tried system restore, but that only restores the main drive on the host computer, I do have the original recovery disks, but the cdrom is playing up and wont see them as boot disks, any help would be greatly appreciated, cheers Jed

If you use an external keyboard, you can use its enter key.

What "registry issue" are you referring to? Can't really tell you how to fix it without knowing what exactly the issue is.

can't plug an external keyboard into the laptop, there is no port for one and the registry issues would be the start up commands, the reason the PC is constantly rebooting, this is a nightmare!

Are you saying this laptop has neither a USB nor a PS/2 port?

      What model is the laptop?

Hi, it is an old sharp, it does have USB ports, but those don't fire up until windows has booted, I was using a numeric keypad and it's enter button, but that won't work until windows is running, it does have a PS2 connection on the rear, but it has the recess for the plastic block horizontally instaed of vertically, if that makes any sense????

An older laptop should have a PS2 Port...

What port do you use to connect the numeric keypad, it should work for an external keyboard as well.  Unless it was one of the older serial ones.

Hi, the keypad is USB unfortunatly and there are NO serial or PS2 ports, it is a Sharp Notebook, if that helps
it came with no XP disks, but I do have 2 restoration disks, is it possible to run those to the hard drive, which is connected to this PC by USB cable? or perform a system restore on only that drive, I tried it, but it just restored the drive on the host PC, really getting to the end of my tether with it......

              ok. here's the latest update.....

installed partition magic and used the boot screen to access the laptop drive, attatched by USB, it now boots so far until I get the error message 'Autochk missing' then it reeboots, I repeated the proceedure and hit F5, which brought up the 'safe mode' boot option, pressed the enter button, but once again it rebooted.....

              4 DAYS and counting.......
